Is it normal to lose this much weight, even in the beginning? I recognize that my 197 start weight was just an estimate since I was mid workout when I weighed. But even so, 2 days ago I was 194. Even as the body fluctuates up and down that seems like too much to me. I don't think the scale is the issue either. It's at my gym and it's one of the scales you get on at the doctors office so I would assume it's pretty accurate. I know the first week can go either way,and that it will quickly start to slow down, but I never expected to lose more than 4 lbs the first week, even if I hadn't had any booboos.
190.0 lb Lost so far: 18.6 lb.    Still to go: 50.0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

IMHO, the important thing isn't the weight, but the difference in weight from the last weigh in. To make it accurate, weigh the same time and on the same scale that you weighed previously. Your body composition will change throughout the day. Weighing on other scales shouldn't be avoided, but try and measure your progress using the same scale, under the same conditions each day. For me I weigh myself every morning; before eating or drinking anything.

Totally normal at the beginning of a diet. Less food in GI tract and a large drop in glycogen and water.

The same can happen in the other direction which is why people freak out about large gains when realistically very minimal fat gain can occur in 1-2 days

So should I expect that the scale will probably go back up a few lbs at some point to balance out Diablo? Or will it just slow? Frosty, I agree. That's what I'm starting to do. I don't own a scale so I use the gyms scale on days that I work out, before I start exercising. The only reason I didn't do that the other day is because I decided to jog up to the gym instead of just driving
