I seem to have arrived upon a formula that works for me. Eat/ drink whatever I want as long as i keep calories below 1,200/ to 1,400 /day. Plus an hour at the gym and 5,000- 7,000 steps per day.

The above formula has me losing about a pound a day. I feel great.
176.9 lb Lost so far: 14.2 lb.    Still to go: 21.9 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.
