Deb_N's Journal, 10 August 2014

For a woman my height, my weight should be 118-131 pounds to fall into the normal range for large boned women. No doubt about it, I have large bones and come from a family of large women. I set my goal weight at the high end of the normal range, at 136 pounds. I am not small boned and for me to be wishing to be 118 pounds would be a fantasy that is insane. [My 136 lbs goal weight was from a different weight chart that I was looking at but don't know where it is now. Not going to change my goal weight now. Don't want to be in the red zone all over again!]

Determining frame size: To determine the body frame size, measure the wrist with a tape measure and use the following chart to determine whether the person is small, medium, or large boned.

Click on my journal to read the rest. It has the Men's wrist size as well and the height weight chart I was referring to.

Women:

Height under 5'2"
Small = wrist size less than 5.5"
Medium = wrist size 5.5" to 5.75"
Large = wrist size over 5.75"

Height 5'2" to 5' 5"
Small = wrist size less than 6"
Medium = wrist size 6" to 6.25"
Large = wrist size over 6.25"

Height over 5' 5"
Small = wrist size less than 6.25"
Medium = wrist size 6.25" to 6.5"
Large = wrist size over 6.5"

Men:

Height over 5' 5"
Small = wrist size 5.5" to 6.5"
Medium = wrist size 6.5" to 7.5"
Large = wrist size over 7.5"

Here is the chart I was looking at that shows the different weights for the size of bones for women. Sorry, guys, you will have to google your own.

I am "large" boned too. While 155 is on my high end, I am still going to strive for my low end 132.

My doc told me recently she is more concerned about health than the stats; I'd rather be my weight and still able to chase Mushy on the floor by crawling than 140lbs and sitting in a chair too sick and unhealthy to move. I am like you - a lot of mass in a short package.. when another physician (not mine, but a friend) saw me one day he commented 'you need to slow down on this loss..you're getting too thin' but had he judged that based on my chart & stats he'd have gone 'overweight... needs to diet.' I'll take 180lb of muscle over 140lb of fat any day. Now I just have to find the middle ground.. one day at a time.

Ditto Bella. The last weight I recall feeling comfortable and energetic would have still put me at overweight on the charts. That's where I want to get back to - not necessarily that number but that feeling. Since I'm decades older that I was then, I don't know if the magic number will be more or less. When I reach the place that I feel the way I know I can feel and all my medical numbers are good, that's the goal for me.

thanks deb! where's the weight chart? also: do you know how to really figure out the target heart rate?

Thanks, Deb. Where did you find this info? My wrist is a tad over 6" and I'm 5'7", but I doubt I have a small frame. Also, the fat on the wrist can affect the size, so I don't believe it's an entirely accurate way to measure.

Interesting... I must be rather small-boned for a man or my electronic tape is off. My wrist size is 2.6 (above the wrist bone), which makes me very small-framed. This would explain why my weight is "normal" for my height on some charts. However, I still have fat on my sides and stomach and my body fat has been between 28 and 30, right there on the edge of overweight.

I put an image in my journal of the weight height chart, but it is just for women. Click on my journal to see it. Sorry guys, you have to google one for men.

There are other weight height charts online and they are all different. Maybe you could ask your doctor for the chart he/she is using. Unless you want to just do this on your own. Good luck, everyone!

Tulipgirl, when I weighed 222 lbs my doctor told me walk slow but get my heart rate above 90 beats a minute for a good workout. When I became diabetic at 232 pounds, I started walking and watching my calories and carbs, although I did not worry about my heart rate. I'm not jogging or running, but I can feel it beating faster. It's good.

Don't look at how far you have to go, look at how far you have come already! For those who are first starting out, just put one foot in front of the other and get moving. You are going to live your life anyway, so why not just be mindful of what you eat and get out of the chair and be active. If I can do this, anyone can!

Even if you have lost nothing yet, at least you are here and looking at what you should eat and what you can do to change yourself. A caterpillar will turn into a butterfly. You have to believe it and stick with it!

Wow, Deb. I honestly can't believe I have a small frame. I was told my whole life that I was "big boned," like other people in my family. I guess I was just always a big girl instead ;) Nonetheless, it's going to be quite the struggle just to get to the high-end of the "normal" BMI range.

I have skinny fingers, but big hands and big feet (size 11). Does that mean anything? lol

Congratulations on your accomplishments!!
