Woohooo - met initial goal set three months ago. However, I can't go out and celebrate with fine wine and food as this is for my lifetime, not just for a short burst! Yeah - right.

It's my birthday tomorrow. The first genuine step into the third quarter of my life. I've enjoyed the plateau for a year, now looking forward to a health happy and slow slide down the slopes.

It's been a hectic weekend, with Jools Holland and friends at Chepstow races on Friday night; and AOBRFC's Music Festival on the Saturday, it's little wonder that I spent most of yesterday in bed … recovering. It's a cliche but … I've got to admit, I'm not a spring chicken anymore.

Quick analysis of calorie counting has helped me manage food/activity all week. Although I smashed the daily RDI once, I've also kept an eye on my net calorie deficit. Based on the 'hard' count, I was expecting a modest loss of around 1/2 a kilo, despite consuming ridiculous quantity of cider on Saturday. Imagine my relief when I stepped on the most unreliable scales in the west. Okay, I took the first reading as the second and third were ridiculously out. I could go out and buy a new set, but that would take the fun out of weight management (You've got to have a scapegoat)… mine are the scales. Belt test confirms that all is well.

This heat is doing me in … when combined with hormonal flushes - phoo. Can't wait to be into my autumn years proper.

I've got two challenges keeping me honest for a month or two. Swimming the Channel in the Pool is going well. I talked to my friend Lucy Triathlete who has actually swum the Channel (as a fundraiser relay). She tells me never again. The sea was rough and nasty. The pilot boat rocked and rolled all the time. Great experience, but never going to do it again. Well done Luce… The pool effort is much easier!
