skydiverjim's Journal, 01 September 2021

Lately, I have started to let things go again. I am tired. I blamed my not sleeping on the sleep apnea machine but that’s not it this time. That issue has been resolved. Now it’s because of a lack of physical exercise and an elevated pain level. My pain manager made note that I usually have the pain issues around the change of seasons. It seems whenever the seasons start to change, the pain level is elevated. It is a shame because those are the times of the year I love the most.

For those who are reading this – I am writing it more for a personal record I guess. I know this is also a social platform and people use it to encourage and engage others so I will explain the pain index thing. I keep track of my blood pressure, exercise, and pain index on just about a daily basis. I have had multiple surgeries; one was a titanium rod and other hardware placed in my leg after a civilian skydive. It was actually just a simple, “ solo hop & pop” jump. I’ve also had a broken shoulder and a broken humerus from different incidents. I have had separate disk surgeries for a spinal fusion, a herniated disk and have degenerative disk disease – I wish I would have done more research into what the rate of success was before the surgeries rather than just listen to the doctor because this is what has led to a lot of my current physical pain.

Anyway, I really need to dig deep into myself and find the strength to get back on track – to eat, exercise properly, and to keep the right mindset. Even though I may be tired, hurt, and feel bad, it is the perseverance that sees us through to victory.

My sympathies for what you're going through. I doubt this will be much of a consolation--I was recently diagnosed with degenerative joint disease of the spine. I've been doing physical therapy exercises which do help sometimes. I learned from you to be very careful about getting surgery if they ever say I need it. Thank you.

At 80 I can identify Brother; but, having said that, I also encourage you to work through the pain, exercise DOES cause it to diminish over time. Hang in there, you CAN do it!

Jim you really need to relax and rest. We don’t have to be productive all the time!!

I understand. I neglected my health when younger and paying the price. I have gone through what you are going through many times and it's darn hard! I'm rooting for you!

Ouch Jim. Thought I had to deal with pain management but not at that level. I'm in the process learning breathing mediation, and going to acupuncture. Both provided by the same Dr. He's pretty amazing was a MD and decided he wanted to learn another way to heal beside traditional western medicine. Between him & a pain management specialist, daily pains are mostly manageable without serious medication. You're right, when the weather changes you can feel it the day before. Wish I had taken better care playing sports. Get a reminder every rainy day or seasonal changes. Still luv rainy days. Exercise does help, it's just start up that's hard. Hang tight.

I also am entering my dangerous time of year. I’m trying this year putting myself to bed earlier and waking up mid-night for stretch and weights. Tell you next Spring if it worked. Really just something to keep hope rolling, right?

Have you ever considered the possibility of a diet-link and your pain? 14 years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes. Rather than go on meds I opted to try controlling it with diet. I eliminated nearly all carbs until I got blood sugar under control. I credited my improvement in health and absence of joint pain to the loss of 50+ pounds until... I started adding one carb rich food back at a time and monitoring what effect it had on my sugars. The day after I added bread, I was so stiff and sore I could hardly move. To verify I waited a couple weeks and tried something with wheat again, thus discovering that what I thought was rapidly worsening arthritis was actually a wheat sensitivity. I have eliminated grains almost entirely from my diet now, since I've come to suspect that some of them have a similar, though much milder effect on me. Might be worth a try? It may take a number of weeks to clear your body and repair the effects of you are sensitive to something.

Minnizota, I know you've directed your comments to Jim, but I agree with you. The challenge is how do we get pass the carb addiction and craving?

Wow, you have really been through a lot. The weather change gets to me too. Hang in there

@minniezota - yes there is absolutely a link for some of it. It is not a simple solution but that is a big part of why I am watching my weight and dieting. It’s not simply for vanity. Five to ten pounds makes a world of difference and what I eat also means a lot. I wanted to stop in this evening to say thank you to all of you who commented and offered encouragement. I appreciate it. I haven't had the proper time to individually respond to you, but I want to thank you all. I have been meeting voters, doing podcasts and attending assorted events around this area but I will be back. I really have not forgotten any of you. Within 60 days things should be back to normal.
