FocacciaBread's Journal, 03 July 2021

Sacrificed some sleep (5 hours instead of 8) to make sure I could get in one last OTF class before the holiday weekend. Caregivers are on vacation, so I’m “babysitting” my 95 year old grandma.
Any advice for activities for someone who is mostly blind, fairly hard of hearing, reduced/low mobility, and doesn’t like new things? -lol.

Hugs 🤗...lots of hugs! Just being with her and giving her a smile will warm her heart. Think of it more as an opportunity to spend time with someone who's lived through a lot in her long life (and likely doesn't have many of them left) rather than being forced to babysit. It's a privilege for you. You'll miss her when she's gone, and it will be nice to remember special time you got to spend with her.

Oh, of course! Didn’t mean to sound ungrateful- I know that family is precious. I take care of her a lot (bathing, dressing, meals, and her house chores) and last summer I did it full time, all day every day, when COVID meant we didn’t have any caregivers to come to her home. I usually see her at minimum once a month. I was just looking for ideas for things to fill the time, since she really only enjoys watching Game Show Network. And, all love aside, I can’t do five hours straight of Family Feud. Just… no. I tried to read aloud crossword puzzles and do sudoku with her, but no dice. I tried baking with her, multiple times, but she didn’t even want to try dumping items in a bowl. ʅ(◞ _ ◟)ʃ She used to read, but she can’t focus on audiobooks or read-alouds, and can’t see print books anymore, even if they’re large print. Sorry for the info-dump, but yeah, I see her a lot, but the activities we can do together are dwindling. Just wanted to see if anyone had ideas on how to keep her entertained. Thanks!

Didn't mean to jump on you. It's just some people tend to toss old people aside. I used to read to my Mom. Even though toward the end she didn't really take it all in, she always got a big smile on her face when she heard my voice. If I think of anything I'll let you know.
