Kingstephen's Journal, 10 January 2014

Bells, whistles and streamers day, reached that first all important goal and made it below 120Kg, so its time for a low cal, low carb celebration lol.

So its almost six weeks since I started this 5:2 lifestyle (not diet its a lifestyle) and I was thinking driving to work this morning about it all and from my own personal experience I can say the following:

1...Its the easiest diet plan Ive ever done

2...Its the most successful Ive ever done

3...Its allows me flexibility to choose which fast days I want and can work them around my lifestyle.

4...Its the most lifestyle friendly thing in the world I love a drink or three, and do so two or three times a week - I just count the calories in what Im doing and try to allow for them in my daily limit, if I go over I throw in an extra fast day. Similarly if I crave carbs, chocolate ice cream, dessert after dinner out etc same thing applies. So it doesn't stop me living a life.

5...fasting? how easy is it? Seriously seems like the more fast days I have the more I want, Im actually happy NOT eating on those days. Now Ive always been a big eater, and snacker when Im bored etc, so for me this is a HUGE claim. I know people who don't fast find this part the hardest to believe but I promise anyone who likes to read these ramblings from my warped mind IT IS EASY, its also enjoyable and I look forward to my fast days. Ive said it before but its important; for me its easier not to eat than work out what to eat. Once I make the decision its a fast day most of the cravings go out the window.

6...The more fasting I do it seems as if my stomach has become smaller because the less I want to eat when Im not fasting. You would think the opposite would be true, yet its not. When I finish a fast I do not feel like over eating.

7...As Ive mentioned before I have severe arthritis in my right foot and since I started intermittent fasting the improvement is nothing short of astounding. I am off my anti inflamatories completely, limp is gone if I get any discomfort at all it is very minor and usually only at the end of the day if I have been on my feet too much. this is a complete turn around from before when in the morning I would cringe in pain as soon as I put my foot on the floor getting out of bed. I also have suffered lower back and neck problems, they are both a lot, LOT better too.

8...This is cheap to do, there are no supplements, shakes or potions to buy, I am eating less. yes I take fibre, because at my age everyone should, and I take vitamin B to avoid mouth ulcers from stress, but that's it for me, and I am considerably healthier in every way than I have been for years.

So Im not trying to sell anything, but to anyone contemplating how to feel better, lose weight and (hopefully_) live longer I am a walking example of that IF, and in particular 5:2 fasting is the greatest thing since sliced bread...............not that I eat sliced bread anymore LOL.

I hope I haven't bored anyone, I just felt the urge to preach from the pulpit today because Im in such a good mood. I hope everyone else has a good day too.

I love to hear you sing the song of a happy intermittent faster. I am hearing this more and more. I have not studied the 5:2 but have done the 16:8 for a few weeks now. You have to explain to me how this is done. Congrats on your weight loss. :)

hi Mom (sounds weird that my mum passed away) the 5:2 is a similar principle to 16:8, out of each 7 days two are fast days (500 calories for women) and five are feast days (2000 calories) for men its 600 and 2400 respectively. I choose to have my fast days from dinner through to dinner the next night (24 hours), but I know some people have a small lunch, then bigger dinner but whats important if you do that is its got to be a minimum of 16 hour fast and that you don't go too much over your 500 calories. That said some days I have gone a bit over, and some feast days I've gone over through having a few drinks, or too many carbs etc, if I do I do an extra fast day and get back on track. I weigh myself daily but only record it on the mornings immediately following my fast days. there are wild fluctuations but by doing that the trend has been continually downwards and on a day when its gone up its not upset me because I know overall everything is heading in the right direction. There is a TV documentary called eat Fast and Live Longer by Michael Mosely (a UK doctor) which is really worth watching as it goes into a lot of science about it all, and its this show that convinced me to try it for myself. As I said before the plan really suits my lifestyle, allows me a few drinks and to be social and the fasting (for me) is the easy bit. I hope this helps, if there is something specific you'd like to know feel free to ask. Oh btw, after a talk with Kingkeld I am keen to try to watch my macros too, which simply means trying to get the percentages right between protein, fat and carbs - not always easy and I certainly know when Ive had too many carbs and not enough protein. Thanks for showing an interest Steve

ohh btw, one last point, its really really important to drink lots and lots on fast days, black tea or coffee with no sugar and water. I drink lots of green tea and about 3 litres of water minimum.

Thanks Steve. I am trying to take this in. Is there something online I can read? I am willing to try it if it will get my body "shaken up" and on the losing trend. I love low carb food but like to have a few glasses of wine. I am trying to leave off all grains. Somethings got to give. LOL!

Mom Im a born sceptic, so after a friend recommended the TV show (which I googled and watched on line youtube I think), yes I was impressed, but it wasn't enough so I googled 5:2 diet and read several sites to really get my head around it. there are several books and a few people on this site do it. Ahh Im a wine lover too, especially New Zealand Malborough Sauvingnon Blancs they are my downfall LOL. I agree with you about the grains, though to be fair I do occasionally have something wholemeal of wholegrain, but always factored into my calorie limit. Good luck with googling, you will Im sure love that show if you can find it.

Just ordered the book to read more about it. Something tells me I can do this. As much as I love a good meal, I am thinking fasting a couple days a week would help me cut back the days that I do eat. Thanks... let's keep in touch. :)

happy to help in any way I can, and I'm really interested to know how you go. I started my first fast day without telling anyone, not even my wife because I was so sure I couldn't do it so wouldn't have to own up to failing. But I got through it more easily than I thought and its all been downhill from there. You can do it Im sure, and a couple of weeks from now you will be thinking as I do....why didn't I do this years ago. good luck Mom, message me anytime.

As I keep going up and down the same 3 lbs, I need to shake up things more than I have already. Just trying to figure out my strategies for the upcoming year. So far, the 16:8 has been an incredible start. I am eating better too. The 5:2 will be a back-up plan. I am so proud of you, Steve. :) Have a great weekend.
