Weekly 36-hour fast number five complete. One lb down from last week. Progress is progress.

During a fast, even with drinking water, as I do, the body loses the water stored with the glycogen it uses up, and there may be other reasons why the body loses retained water.

Accordingly, a lot of the weight lost during a short-term fast is so-called water weight.

However, with glycogen depleted and the body in an energy deficit, fat loss also occurs, and my goal through consistent regular weekly fasting is to reduce both my fasted weight (the valleys) and my fed weight (the peaks).

So far so good.
191.0 lb Lost so far: 9.2 lb.    Still to go: 16.0 lb.    Diet followed N/A.
losing 21.0 lb a week

I fast for 36 hours once a week (Saturday night to Monday morning), with just a bit of fiber on Sunday morning, and black coffee, tea, and as much water as I feel like drinking. I don't consume anything else during the fast. On other days I eat normal meals, and I try not to snack after supper, but sometimes I do snack. As for so-called "intermittent fasting" on a daily basis, in my view that's not much different from a normal daily routine, without after-supper snacking. Maybe some people extend the nighttime fast for an hour or two, but mostly it's normal healthy eating habits with a fancy new name.

I'm only five weeks into this somewhat loose plan, but so far I like it. As long as I'm not too tired and I get enough protein, I don't feel the urge to overeat carbs during the rest of the week. I've done a bit of reading about combining higher-carb days, moderate days, and fasting days to maintain advantageous levels of hormones involved in metabolism and hunger, and lowering the body's natural set point, and once I reach my target weight I'm going to read some more to see if this sort of cycling is something I want to try. (If I keep fasting regularly, this might fall into place quite naturally, but in any event, I'm hoping to be able to stick to a deliberate and maintainable plan that doesn't involve actually counting calories, which I'm not doing now and I don't see myself being willing to do over the long term, unless nothing else works for maintenance.)
