I really think starting a diet at the end of your period is the best.idea.ever. I don't think I've even REALLY lost any weight yet but since I retain so much water at "that time of the month" it looks like I have which is giving me motivation to keep it up and keep with it. If I start something at the wrong time of the month, I get really discouraged to see the scale go in the opposite direction of my efforts.
Another motivator, and this is probably strange, is a foursquare badge. I want the gym rat badge so it's been enough to get me out of the house on the days that I don't want to do anything. (And since I hate the gym it's worth it.) I'm doing cardio at the gym mainly, in an effort to be healthy, then doing some wii fit/wii sports stuff later in the day to try to reduce stress. My life has been very stressful the past year or so and I'm a known stress eater so I'm trying to break out of that.
