Today is one of those weird bounce up days...

Bathroom scale: 218.2
FitBit Scale 218.0

Going to record higher weight to be conservative. Will write more later...

Morning Update: As I glanced at the scale this morning, I saw that familiar bump up after some significant weight loss. I attribute it to eating a salty dense meal (Fried Chicken) and water retention. I don't feel any bloat or anything so I know that may be the answer. I know from a calorie perspective I was way under my mental goal of 1500 calories a day. I guess I'll strike it up to a pattern bump.

Thoughts for the Day:

1) Its going to get tougher - As I near my goal weight, I know that losing weight will become a slower deal. I imagine it like climbing a mountain...as you climb from the base the angle of the hike is not to bad and you make great progress, as you pass the milestones up the mountain you notice the air gets thinner, you start to slow your climb to a crawl, you can see the apex but the movement towards it becomes deliberate and slow. You reach the apex but your progress was slower in that last half of the climb than it was in the first half. Its the same with weight loss, in the beginning you may see greater amounts of weight lost in a quicker time frame, but that last half you will labor to get to your goal weight, you will see many more bumps in the road, you will see more frequent plateauing and when you reach your goal you will be amazed at how slow that last half of your weight race felt. Additionally, as you lose weight your basal metabolic rate slows down as well, you body does not burn as much in calories as it used to...why? There was more of you to burn calories, now there is less of you so the basic calorie burning you do by just living slows down accordingly. Do not get frustrated. You will reach the finish line, you just need to focus on the overall goal and know that you may need to further adjust your caloric intake to match what your body can now burn. For me, I need to make sure that I stay about 1000 calories below my BMR per day and that way I keep pace with my weight loss. Now, obviously there will be days where I am over those calories BUT I will not give up. This time, I will make my goal and not stop at 212.

2) Cat Calls - Yesterday in the office, I got the following compliments : "Damn, you look like Atlas", "Gabe, oh my god, those pants are loose on you". Did it feel good? Hell yeah! Do i need those reinforcements to continue on my diet? No, I am doing this for my own health and for my own comfort. However, it is nice to hear and greatly appreciated.

3) Wheat Belly - On the recommendation of HCB, Thanks HCB, I purchased an e-book called "Wheat Belly". The doctor who wrote suffered similar issues as I did when he ate grain based products....lethargy, bloated belly, man boobs, you name it he had it. He discovered that when he cut it out of his diet, his health got better, he dropped weight and his ailments improved. As a cardiologist he told his clients to do the same. He observed that they also improved greatly and in some instance cured their own diseases such as Diabetes, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome and celiac disease. I recommend EVERYONE read it...even if you are a skeptic...you may be surprised at how a simple switch in eating may affect you. As for myself,I had already dropped wheat/grains from my diet and as you can see from my chart, the weight loss has been amazing. I feel more awake and alive and my focus is definitely improved. I wholeheartedly recommend the loss of grains from your daily diet and a switch to the Paleo/Primal diet.

Did you know that there are only 1.6 ounces in a tenth of a pound? Your gain wasn't much more than a small glass of water! It's funny how that happens though, almost always happens to me too. To comment on your number 1, I'm not sure that I agree with that. Maybe for the last 10 pounds, I've heard that is hard to lose, but I think my metabolic rate has actually increased. I'm basing that on absolutely nothing except that I have so much more energy and still losing weight quickly. So I could be completely wrong :-) Number 2-Mrrrooowww Number 3-LOVE that book! It changed my world! That is the book that the weight-loss doctor on the plane was reading, and what got our conversation started. The primary health issue that bothered me the most was pain from arthritis (I have auto-immune issues that caused the arthritis). After not eating wheat, I noticed an immense improvement. And last week when I ate it--pain again. Hmmm....thanks for bringing up that book!

I can't take all the credit...HCB is the one who made me aware of that book through her journal. Thank her...that book is a God Send!

Dang, no wheat and grains, that would mean no oatmeal, no whole wheat home made pita chips, no brown rice, no whole wheat fajita tortella and no Bear Naked maple pecan granola. I think I would have to go into rehab. I am not a cavewoman. I know what you say might very well be true but how can you take someone like me that has been eating whole grains for 60 years and train her to eat only veggies, fruit & animal meat with a yam thrown in here and there? I certainly could use less arthritis pain and less bloating. Obviously, to have lost 30 lbs. I have given up many carb calories but to give up even more might be very hard. I am so determined to eat as perfectly as possible but making drastic changes (while cooking for DH) might cause me to do a tail spin. Thanks for making me think about this stuff. I really want to be healthier. "Wheat Belly" huh? I will have to put that on my coffee table right next to "The Belly Fat Cure" by Jorge.

Wheat belly is an awesome book - and don't dispair about the 2nd half - for some your metabolism actually does rev up - When I lost 80 pounds after my first two kids it was actually difficult to stop loosing weight in the end - I ended up 10 pounds lighter than what I was aiming for (and yes I kept it off for over 10 years until my next set of pregnancies) Secondly no one even notices the first 10 pounds you loose!!!!!! But the last 10 pounds...the difference is incredible! Almost jaw dropping :) So there may be quite a few more belt purchases in your future!

Thanks to all..Neptunebch, I have read through your journal and honestly, some of the ailments that you may have referenced can be a result of wheat/grain associated issues. I'd would say, try it for a week, if you find that the absence of that food does not improve your physical well being then you can always go back. BUT, if it helps you then you will be better off for it. Krystal, thanks for the kind words...I look forward to buying the new belts!

Word. Cutting out processed carbs just for one week can really make one feel completely different. It worked like a charm for me.

Yup - I seldom eat processed stuff - just small amounts of bran for fiber and some dairy.

Okay - I made home made yellow rice tonight and had a 1/2 cup with dinner. I will attempt to limit the processed carbs starting tomorrow. I will not pack granola or pita chips tomorrow. I will not take oatmeal for breakfast. I will take a banana and what??? I am trying to reduce my Cholesterol so I can't take hard boiled eggs or lots of meat. Salad for lunch with my homemade lemon mustard dressing with chicken and vegetables. I am struggling with hunger...and it might just be something else but I don't know what. I am rambling on your journal...sorry but you started it! LOL :)

NeptuneBeach - maybe just start with reducing wheat and yeast based products like the pita chips and any breads, cereals, or cracker type stuff. Oatmeal could be further down the list...eat much more protein to curb your hunger!

I love how this is helping Neptunebch. This is what I love about FS, we can help and encourage each other.

Neptunebch you can still eat egg whites unlimitedly even with high cholesterol - I like them with cherry tomatoes, red peppers and onions. you can have a LARGE volume of this for very little calories. You can also do a broccoli and cheese and or ham shake things up a bit - But I honestly found that getting rid of ALL grains made a significant difference - weight wise, health wise and mood wise!!! There are also tonnes of soups you can make - 2 cans of tomatoes, 2 cans of green beans, 2 cans of yellow beans, 2 carrots, 2 celery sticks, and 2 onions - we call it the 2-2 salad - even my kids love it!! You can also try to make your own turkey or chicken meatballs to have on hand for when you are starving. I wish you the best!!!!
