HCB's Journal, 19 May 2015

Greetings Buddies:

Wow - I am dragging along due to my sinusitis and allergies. I finished the antibiotic the one doctor threw at me - no change in my condition. I have used flonase, and over the counter antihistamine and a decongestant - not even close to touching it!

I have the classic stuffed ears, dripping nose, and completely blocked sinuses - I had to skip my workout this morning! I hate doing that...

After calling a few places, I finally got an appointment this week with a colleague of my regular ENT - she is book out until July! The general physicians I already have seen just threw antibiotics at me. I hope the specialist will offer something better to treat the symptoms! My appetite stinks and my energy is not great either.

Words of the week:
"Don't let worn-out beliefs stop you from moving beyond yourself."

I am dedicated, determined and diligent.

About 15 years ago, a friend went online and discovered that 5 of the medications his mother-in law was currently taking WARNED about the possible side effect of causing the CONDITION that caused her to need to be hospitalized...after informing her DR.(one assigned at the hospital) a couple of those meds were dropped and others received a substitute...she was able to go home a couple of days later....The Dr.s comment to the family??? "Why do you think we call what we do... PRACTICING medicine?" (true story)...HOPE you get some RELIEF soon!!!!

I found some relief from rubbing Mentholatum on my chest at night, and putting some in hot water in my bathroom sink, putting a towel over my head and the sink, and breathing in the steam. It's an old home remedy my mom used on us kids, and I was happy to find that it still worked for me. Vick's Vaporub works, but Mentholatum is less expensive. Have you tried a neti pot, or NeilMed, for nasal rinsing/irrigation? Those have been helpful for me in the past. We're having the worst allergy season ever, I think. I had viral bronchitis, which hurt my lungs enough that I'm now using two inhalers, two months later. My primary care doctor thinks I may need them for a couple more, until this allergy season is past. Hope you feel better soon.

I hate flonase. It's like squirting perfume up my nose. I use nasonex. Every day. Fights the allergies that cause the other problems. Do you have a vaporizer? It makes the air moist, especially when you're sleeping. I spent most of my childhood with one.

I had the same problem and changed my diet. 85% of ailments are from eating the wrong foods. Try a colon cleanse first, which is easy, just drink juice and broth for a week. You will get cleansed out good! Then eat veggies and fruit for a week, no meat and no dairy. Most of your problem is probably dairy. Cut out the dairy and move into meat slowly and only small portions. If you are not a meat eater, then no problem. If you like chicken and steaks, keep them to 6-8 oz. at a time. The meat takes a couple days to digest and backs you up. Eat fruit first, always. It only takes 20 minutes to digest. Then eat veggies, with lots of greens, they are enriched with phytonutrients and macronutrients that help your body build and metabolize. Eat your meat last and chew it well to help digest. If you want quick results, stop the dairy first. No milk, cheese, cottage cheese, etc...most snotty noses are from dairy. If you don't dry up in a couple days, then do a colon cleanse and start eating only vegies and fruit. Once your sinuses are under control, then slowly start the meat. You will feel like a new person!

One of my anti-anxiety medications is actually an anti-histamine that really helps me out as well, Vistaril or Attarax. As for it being a bad year...I've been hearing "it's one of the worst years for allergies this year" for years now.

So sorry you are not feeling well. Hope you get better soon!

@rodneylarson - i appreciate your ideas but I do NOT eat dairy at all. This is not a food related issue nor do I just have "a snotty nose". I have chronic sinusitis and have had sinus surgery in the past. Also, for those convinced I need NetiPot - I have one and typically use it - but my sinuses are now so swollen all the solution goes into my ear canals so I cannot irrigate anything. I do not believe I have an infection since the antibiotics did nothing. I appreciate the well wishes from all of you!

Seriously if you haven't tried a net pot (I use one called nasaline) it works wonders and since I started using it 5 years ago not sinusitis or antibiotics.

Focus on nourishing your body and resting so you can heal. Pushing through will only dig a deeper hole. It is a tough year for any kind of allergies here because the pollen is insane. Maybe it is seasonal and will pass. Good luck!

HCB, so sorry that is so painful! I can't imagine waiting until July. Have you asked to be notified if the doc has cancelations? I had a severe sinus infection and bronchitis in March. Doc had me on antibacterial, prednisone, and to continue with Singular at night, Claritan in the am Flonase (Nasonex is the same drug) in addition to my normal asthma drugs that I am to stay on until the pollen and mold from all this rain subsides Not that it will work for you. It has been a bad allergy season as the weather has caused the trees to all pollenate at or close to the same time. Here we have the added pine pollen that we do not normally have, apparently our mild winter let them pollenate this year, most years the weather isn't conducive for that to happen. I hate taking all these drugs but they are helping.

Won't comment with my yellow page medical degree on your sinus condition...I am sure that you are doing exactly as you should! However, I will say a little prayer that you start getting some relief and feeling better soon!

For whatever it is worth, my doctor stresses that even though you are on antibiotics, NEVER stop taking your allery meds. You've got to keep those sinuses clean so the antibiotics can do their work. I take Loratadine (Clariton) year round. But when things get rough I find swtiching up my med helps. I always keep a bottle of Nasonex for real emergencies. I may sound like a junkie but at least I can breath :)

Look at my list at the moment Buffy!!! Doc trying to not have a repeat of last year with 3 bouts of pneumonia and bronchitis probably triggered by my body fighting allergies/asthma issues and leaving me more susceptible. Especially since the bronchitis is probably an asthmatic bronchitis.

Wholefoodnut - sorry you have to go through that. I am very fortunate that I don't have asthma (been tested). I am just allergic to grass and trees. Where to live where there is no grass and trees?
