Is it my imagination or do the avocados send everyone running to the bathroom? I've got to cut back to half per day.

Sarah -- Avocados are a RESTRICTED food on the FODMAP diet for IBS because they cause diarrhea for many people due to the particular sugar molecules in them. I love them-- but I can't eat more than 1/2 avocado 1-2x per week, and not two days in a row, and not if I have eaten anything else high FODMAP on the same day. You might want to look at the information on FODMAP and see if there might be other things on the high FODMAP list that also bother you. See below. https://stanfordhealthcare.org/content/dam/SHC/for-patients-component/programs-services/clinical-nutrition-services/docs/pdf-lowfodmapdiet.pdf FODMAPs are carbohydrates (sugars) that are found in foods. Not all carbohydrates are considered FODMAPs. The FODMAPs in the diet are: Fructose (fruits, honey, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), etc) Lactose (dairy) Fructans (wheat, garlic, onion, inulin etc) Galactans (legumes such as beans, lentils, soybeans, etc) Polyols (sweeteners containing isomalt, mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, stone fruits such as avocado, apricots, cherries, nectarines, peaches, plums, etc) FODMAPs are osmotic (means they pull water into the intestinal tract), may not be digested or absorbed well and could be fermented upon by bacteria in the intestinal tract when eaten in excess

Thanks all. HCB, I thought, wow, this really is a super food. Lost 3 lbs overnight. Lol. Hermiones Mom, I will study this information and respond back later. I'm At lunch with my sister today. I have to purge tomorrow for my colonoscopy on Friday. Wish the doctor just prescribed avocados.

Don't get me wrong, avocados ARE a superfood, really -- it's just that some people over-react to certain sugar molecules, so the trade off for eating that superfood is spending 24 hours in the bathroom dehydrating. I understand where you are coming from! I did the purge and colonoscopy in October, and in spite of my IBS-D, I was declared in perfect health with no need for another test for 10 years. When I first started on the FODMAP diet, I had been so sick that I was very strict for a long time, and my symptoms came under control. Just in the past couple of months, I've been experimenting with adding back in some foods, including peaches, apples and nectarines, and I'm finding that as long as I don't overdo it, and I don't eat two banned foods in any quantity on the same day or two days in a row, I'm still doing OK. I am so grateful to have found a gastroenterologist who knew about this and helped me on the road to recovery. My IBS is under very good control with no medication, just diet. Plus it's also helped with weight loss: As soon as I completely gave up wheat, I came off a longstanding plateau and starting losing again.

Hermiones Mom, thank you for this information. I knew nothing about this stuff. I do see many foods on the list that always give me symptoms. I thought my symptoms were related to my diabetes II. I'm insulin dependent (for now). Since January I have gradually reduced my carbs and have had great results. This change removed all the wheat and processed foodstuffs. I'm finally starting to feel better, but now I struggle with blood sugar drops below 60. This list is a wonderful tool. I think I will use the worksheet to back track and record my symptoms. I get this diahhrea pretty often, always thought it was how I eat (lol). Now I can track it and maybe see a patterns/trends. BTW, I can't go shopping in Kohls without an episode. Thank you for your help...whee whee whee....
