Gastro Patient's Journal, 26 February 2016

It's been about 2 weeks since new whammy of lactose and fructose malabsorption diagnoses. I feel significantly better. Acid reflux had diminished to 85% or less, except when I bend over or lift. Nighttime is pretty decent. I've not taken ranitidine for a week at least.

Finding recipes for the low-fat, low-fiber, no fructose, lactose-only-with-lactase-pill is tough. I played around trying to adapt gingerbread using non-fructan flours (some spelt, some rice, some potato). Guar gum made it a little gummy. Used real ginger--this worked. Tasty, albeit odd texture. Good smell in the kitchen.

I need to work up a good bread flour combination.

We had E. & R. for dinner last night. DH's grilled salmon, marinated in non-fructans (macerated carrot, malt vinegar & mandarin orange & organic orange pills, oil, salt & pepper, sugar); wild rice with shaved carrot pieces & olive oil [I didn't eat]; cooked broccoli & dried tomato & oil [I didn't eat]; olives; fabulous wine; spinach & lettuce salad with artichokes [I didn't eat]; homemade fructose and lactose-free gingerbread with homemade honeycrisp applesauce [I didn't eat applesauce]; Earl Gray tea.

I need to find a source for buying powdered dextrose. I need to figure out how to deal with constipation. I've taken a little Miralax today and we'll see if that product works. I tried 40 minutes on a walking machine at the community center today--gravity, do your work!

Things aren't easy but they are do-able. It could be a lot worse.

Regular magnesium supplementation can help, and it provides other benefits too. Good luck with everything! I admire how hard you're working to make productive adaptations.
