Sandy701's Journal, 18 July 2011

It's not raining anymore so it's back to walking...3.4 miles this morning. Lots of spring in my step after 3 entire days off (what a slug!).

Yesterday, I ran across a hilarious column in the newspaper (Northwest Florida Daily News) by Celia Rivenbark. I'll just give you the first paragraph but you might find the rest online, not sure.

"Duh Hubby and I recently decided to go on a diet together. I realize that because men have the ability to lose 10 pounds in the exact same amount of time it takes for a woman to lose 1 pound, this formula could lead to bitterness or, say, homicide in the next few weeks, but we believe it's worth it."

And, it goes on from there - just so very funny - and appropriate for my current status!

Last night, I was looking for something in my previous journal entries and came across some interesting thoughts. I've been looking for "keys" (other than giving up my current eating patterns or adding exercise) to getting my weight loss moving at something faster than a snail's pace. Yes, I know....VERY wishful thinking. But bear with me here. My loss has been 2 pounds in April, 2 pounds in May, 3 pounds in June and still working on 1 or 2 this month (don't remember exactly, would have to check).

Interestingly, I saw my weight loss pattern getting smaller and smaller, in step-wise fashion, as the months went on last fall, even though my exercise amounts were increasing (as best I could). In early December, I wrote that if the pattern continued, I'd be "stuck" in June at about 167 pounds. Well....it's July and I'm 163, which is all pretty darn close. Can my body go lower? I've been reading the Drs. Eades' information (a la Protein Power) on how to get back into that dynamic weight loss, as they call it. Not sure about anything right now, just reading and assessing.

And....what about this excess skin? Those with smaller amounts to lose don't have this issue and/or if they're younger. Those with maybe 100+ pounds lost (I'm guessing here) probably have this issue to a greater extent. If I have excess skin that hasn't (yet?) shrunk to accommodate a smaller body, it must weigh something. Is it possible I have a smaller, leaner weight/body mass, excluding the excess skin, than I would have had at 163 "on the way up?" If the excess skin were gone, would I be at 150-something? Lower? I have no idea how much skin weighs.

All this said, yes, I know I'd be better off just doing Atkins BY THE BOOK and seeing what results would come of that. And I suppose that's what I'll need to do. I just thought I was past that and could take some liberties (still within the program) and get away with it. I so-o-o-o much just want to be done with the weight loss part of this program and get on into Maintenance (throwing a bit of a hissy fit, here). This fretting about each and every pound that's coming off even more slowly than slow, is makin' me mad!

Sandy - Go ahead and throw all the hissy fits you want - that is what this journal is for. Not sure if this works for you, but I have to keep imagining the long haul. Even if you only lost 1 pound a month, by this time next year you'll be 12 pounds thinner - and probably into the next size down. So don't fret too much about pounds. P.S. - Not sure about you but I would much prefer baggy skin to fat.

Oh that's so true, Buffy. I have no urge to smooth out the excess skin by filling it up with fat!

PS - Forgot to mention, my husband can lose 10 pounds by quitting beer.

It is soooo darn hard to be PATIENT! I am working on being better in that area also! Some days are easier than others, but mostly I struggle with it. I have been trying to just figure out how to really enjoy where I am at NOW, & not worry so much about where I was, or where, more spcifically WHEN I get to where it is I am going...weight wise that is! I have heard there are scales out there that measure body fat in addition to the pounds. I almost bought one of those, but, decided against it because I didn't want to drive myself nuts with yet another number. But, Sandy, for you maybe that would be a good idea?

Dar, I tend to agree with you in that it would be yet another number to drive me nuts (mmmm, NUTS!!!). But I digress... I guess I'm also not really convinced of those scales' accuracy in that respect. For those that have them and like them, great, all the more power to you. But I kind of liken those measurements to the readings on the Ketostix; OK in broad, general terms, but not so accurate you should make lifestyle/dietary changes based on them. Of course, I've been known to be wrong.....LOL!!!

You said it girl...stressing will hurt your weight loss for sure...I don't know why but it does..I am sure the skin does weigh some..Your stronger now and more toned from all the walking and you have done a wonderful job...keep it up girl..and it is also good to check yourself once in awhile...Have a great evening.....Bren
