Teddy's Journal, 21 May 2015

I am not able to weigh in because I am traveling (Slovenia). I have had some amazing food and beer. But I have been rather active, including biking into the city center and back on the first few days, and then going on a big hike/climb on Monday and playing futsal on Tuesday night for an hour and a half. We played 3V4 and I was always on the team of 3 so I had to run a great deal. My legs were super tired this morning, but in a good, muscle sore way, not the aching "I feel old" way that they sometimes feel.

One of the futsal players complimented me by saying that I was very fit-- which meant a lot coming from him because he is a dedicated ultra-marathoner. I also was proud to be complimented that I played much better than they expected an American would play.

All the activity that I have done so far on this trip is the product of the first time I started on fatsecret in 2007, when I made a commitment to become more active again. There is no way I would have been able to do these things without making all the little bits of progress and over time, and with finding activities that I enjoy doing for reasons beyond fitness.

I like to bike because I like to explore and go places. I like to hike/climb because I like to experience situations and locations that I cannot otherwise reach. And I like futsal because I can develop and express skill without it being as hard on my body as soccer. The futsal in particular I have developed only in the last 5 years, and this is due initially to working on soccer with my kids. And then it grew into an effort to improve my skills now that I am older and better able to learn than when I was younger. Beyond basic mechanics and timing I would say that 75% of my skill at futsal was learned after I turned 40.

Tomorrow I am hoping to go climbing in Osp, but the forecast is for rain. My hope is that we can find a steep section where the routes are still dry despite the rain. I don't know if that will be possible, but I very much hope to climb on some of the famous routes here in Slovenia, mainly because the formations and rock type are ones that are not typical for my part of world.

The irony was not lost to me when I awoke in the middle of the night with a severe and unexplained pain in my right knee! Thankfully it ibuprofen and adding a cushion under the knee for the rest of the night solved it and I was able to go climbing on Saturday without problem. I promise to the universe not to be so glib about my health in future posts. lol.
