DairyKing's Journal, 17 March 2015

Good Morning, FS Warriors! Yay, I am losing 2 lbs. per day; at this rate, in four months I will weigh 11 pounds! Haha, don't we wish it worked that way? It makes me sick that a shirt I wore just last week fit so well, and yesterday, the buttons were missile hazards! I just don't understand how clothes can shrink that fast while hanging on a hangar. I'm sure the air is too dry; I'll have to fire up the humidifier.

Almost 80 degrees yesterday, but today we are apparently back to normal with a predicted high of 51. After all, this is the last week of winter, and the weather is pretty decent. I'm not complaining; I am just anxious to be outside working in a t-shirt. I need to dust off the bicycle and start easing back into some kind of exercise program. The delinquent renter is coming to dinner with his wife tonight and we are going to discuss ways he can work off his debt. I will find out what kind of man he is over the next few days. I know that, in his circumstances, I would welcome the opportunity to earn my keep. I think too many people today get way too comfortable taking advantage of other peoples' hospitality. After all, he could have come to me, instead of me having to approach him about ways to reconcile his debt. I'm just calling a spade a spade. I don't mind helping people, but I expect a man to man up, and come to me, instead of going to DW and telling her why he couldn't pay the rent, and that was only the first couple of months. After a couple months of that, he just avoided us altogether. Perhaps I expect too much from people in this day and age. I see a lot of that mentality today that speaks, "If I can just hold off until mom and dad pass away, then I'll have it made." I've seen that actually come to pass a number of times in the very county we live, and guess what? Because they never developed a work ethic or reponsibility, they squandered their inheritance in less than a year, and were worse off than in their former state. I'm just sounding off. I know it has nothing to do with dieting. This is not Generation Y or Z we're talking about here; I'm talking about people all the way up into their late 40's. It does my heart good to see that some of the younger generation do have a solid work ethic, and take responsibility seriously. It just seems that those character traits are becoming more rare as time goes by.

Well, enough of that. I forgot to tell you folks about Mack's latest adventure. The other night, a big river rat got into our yard. The bottom line: Mack 1; River Rate 0. For the first time in 2 months, I went to bed an hour early. It doesn't pay. An hour and a half later, I hear DW making all kinds of noise. I guess she wanted to make sure I was awake before she woke me up. LOL! Apparently, a new neighbor had his live-in girlfriend ring the doorbell and tell DW that there was a heck of a fight going on between our dog and another animal and there was blood everywhere, and the commotion was keeping her loved one awake. DW told me later that the brave soul stood back about 20 feet behind her, cursing a stream of 4-letter words about how he was going to call the animal control guy and how he was sure we were breaking an ordnance. Well, the dog doesn't bark unless something is going on outside out of the ordinary. Anyway, I got dressed. The man was gone. I went out into the yard, and Mack's mouth was all bloody, and I couldn't tell how much of it was his and how much of it was something else. Another neighbor joined me in the hunt for the other animal. We found a blood trail, but no animal. I followed the blood trail about 75 yards around the perimeter of the fence, and then some more blood on the gate, where the animal had apparently gotten out. By this time, the young lady (probably mid 30's) joined us and she said the animal was furry and had a long skinny tail. I said that there were only two kinds of animals in this area that matched that description: a possum and a river or sewer rat. She said it wasn't a possum. She looked up river rate on her phone, and said, "That's what it was." I never did find the rat, but the woman said that there was no way it could have lived, the way it's head was chewed up. But, rats are survivors. Mack had a small cut on his lower lip where he had apparently been bit, and it bled pretty good also. So, his adrenaline was rushing, and I spent about half an hour calming him down and getting the cut to quit bleeding. DW gave him a hard biscuit to chew, and then I had to get the bleeding to stop again. Duh! Anyway, he was caught up on his shots, but I called the vet the next morning. They were worried more about infection than rabies. They told me to keep an eye on him and watch for vomiting, failing to eat or anything out of the ordinary. I started feeding him something a little softer, and he has recovered nicely. He's just as gluttonous as when he was five years younger. So, I never found the rat, and I don't know how many of you are familiar with river rats, but they are about the size of a small dog. Even though I never knew Mack to be mean, he is a hunting dog, and I was at first worried that he had gotten hold of some neighbor's cat or something. Thank goodness it wasn't. So, that's my story.

Have a great and wonamous day!

Once the weather gets straightened out, I think a lot of us will get back on track. Good job on the 2lbs loss.

Nice drop! I know what you mean about some people's lack of responsibility and poor work ethic. Unfortunately there are people close to me that fill that description...thankfully I'm getting healthy and depriving him of that (early) inheritance. As you work with your delinquent renter you are modeling integrity. One can only pray it will be a turning point in that young man's life. -Well done, DairyKing.

Good job on the weight loss! I have had people avoid me after borrowing just $5 from me, not even mentioning the higher amounts. I never see them in quite the same light again if they don't bother to pay me back. We all go through tough times at some point. But we have to rise to the circumstance and do the best we can, especially by the people who tried to help. He should have come to you but probably was too embarassed, took the easy way out. Shame on him. Quite a story with your dog! Good for him! He kept the rodent away from his family! I have had some wonderful dogs who went the extra mile to protect their family and property. Their instincts are wonderful! Glad he didn't more wounds fromt he encounter!

It was good the neighbors let you know about the dog and rat fight, but the husband was really a wuss, wasn't he? :o) Good luck on that renter. I am thinking you are being to kind, but as you say .. let's see what they are made of and if they really want to pay off their debt. Awesome job on the weight loss, DK! Keep plugging away!
