SaintViper's Journal, 08 June 2011

So I went running outside on Monday for the first time. What a shock. I could barely run for 5 minutes and had to stop because I was short of breath. I know I'm not a great runner but I know I'm not that bad. I don't think I was even challenging myself physically but aerobically it just wasn't happening.

So I decided I'd go to the doctor on Tuesday and get it checked out. I was hoping maybe it would be something simple like bronchitis or at worst an exercise induced asthma type thing and I'd just get an inhaler and everything would be great. Lol, apparently saying shortness of breath and tightness in the chest (from breathing so hard and probably poor air quality) are medical code words for "I'm about to keel over". They immediately did an EKG which was fine and tomorrow I get a stress test. Plus I'm ordered not to exercise until after the stress test.

I suppose this is good in that I'll be able to get this checked out and know that everything is great. On the other hand, I'm reminded of why I tend to avoid going to the doctor unless it's something that I've had for 6 months and doesn't look like it's going to go away on it's own. I kind of wonder what they'll do if the stress test says everything is great. Is it too late to tell them it was just a one time thing and if it happens again I'll let them know or will they continue to run tests and give me drugs until they actually create a condition that they say they can treat.

ah yes, the panic of the "breathing/chest issues" at the doctor's office. LOL! And you probably just had some asthma or allergies or something. But there ya have it. But as you say, you'll get a green light now and then you'll know you're good to go and that anything you feel from here on out must be minor. I was having some trouble breathing on the last day of my big bike ride over Memorial Day. Kept having to take short quick breaths. Felt really weird. Finally decided it was allergies because then I was sort of coughing and hacking a bit when it was done and for the next day or two. Different area, different pollens I guess, not that I'm generally prone to allergies, but when using the lungs at that capacity, I guess we might notice those things more. Good luck with the tests. Hope everything comes out A++.

hey, I just wanted to add that a bunch of people around here are posting stuff on FB about how they are having trouble breathing after being outside. Coughing stuff up, going into asthma like responses. I guess it's just a TERRIBLE pollen/allergy year, so hopefully that's all that is getting to you too.

Just got back from taking the test. They don't have the full results yet but they didn't see anything so far that concerned them.
