Tamielyn's Journal, 21 April 2011

I have some questions for the joggers and runners on there. I am in the early stages of jogging and hope to progress into running. While my body itself seems to hold out well my lungs do not. After a bit, it is so hard to keep my breath to comfortable level to maintain jogging for an extended period of time, that I have to stop every so often to catch my breath and then continue again. I know that even though I have started losing weight that I still have more to lose and that maybe part of my problem. What I want to know is that until I lose more weight to where it is easier to jog what can I do to help with my breathing? Are there any breathing techniques that will help and will this get better wih time? P.S I am not a smoker so that is not a factor.---Thanks!

I'm not an expert or anything, but I did some team running in high school. My coach taught me to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. Seems hard to do, huh? That's because you breathe in for four steps and out for one. That slows down your breathing so you don't tire out as fast, but you still get enough oxygen to run. It takes a bit to get used to so do that as a warm up or something. After stretching when you get to the gym, jog for two minutes and work strictly on that. Don't push yourself to go fast or lengthen your stride or anything, just concentrate on your breathing. After awhile you'll get used to it.

Thanks I will try that. I have such a strong drive just to break out and run but I know that wouldn't be good right now. For now I am going to try and work on the quality of my jogging and not quantity or length of it.

Working on the quality is key. You'll increase your endurance and speed better that way. It could harm you more otherwise. Good luck!
