So my question for today is about sodium.

If I buy a pound of ground beef or raw chicken at the grocery store, there's a ton of sodium in it... who in the world added so much sodium?

I understand if you buy something with a sauce, or pre-made hamburger patties, but raw stuff... really!

Hmm, I didn't know that. I've never been one to really watch my sodium. In fact, it would drive me nuts when friends would be like, "Oh! You can't add salt, you're on a diet." I'm hoping it's just a lull with my cold and that sodium isn't the culprit. I love salt, in moderation. lol

Sodium is a naturally occurring substance in meat, ever notice how some are saltier than others? Mmmm...bacon. Personally I don't track it but I do know there are some meats that need more salt than others when you cook them.

I just thought that because it's not a hamburger patty, that ground beef would be better... but I'm seeing a lot of the salt is in the meat! I'm not a big salt person... just whatever's in the food... or potato chips... mmmm... chips! LOL

I think it's because of 1 of 2 things... either the salt is already in the meat of the animal and/or it's added to preserve it longer. I've been wondering this myself. Maybe I should google it...

Like Kat said. Some meats naturally have a higher amount of salt than others. I've just recently started keeping track of my sodium. And I've noticed a difference in the number on my scale dropping steadily. Only time I really maintain weight for more than 3 days or so is when I've eatten foods with a higher amount of sodium. >.< Takes 2-3 days to flush the excess water out of my body. I hope some of that rant helped. XD Try going low sodium for a week or two and see what it does. I'm usually between 1500-2500mg of sodium a day. And drink 8-16 cups of water a day (including my mugs of green tea). Hope some of that helped. Best of luck to you!! And your Doing GREAT with your weightloss!! :D

Lean ground beef, chicken breasts, turkey bacon, tuna, salmon and egg whites. My key proteins. Have not tried the legumes yet...I try to watch my sodium, but keeping my protein up and my sodium down are 2 things that I have issues with..yes I know cut out the ketchup...but I can't...its like my little slice of heaven that makes the world go round, and how that one little tbsp of ketchup makes a burger a burger. :P Other than the ketchup, I do not add salt to my food, if I do it is sea salt. I LOVE sea salt (in moderation of course). I want to do this too..but I have found for me if I keep track and worry about every little thing...like 1 calorie for that piece of gum, I get frustrated spend too much time on the computer recording what i ate, and not enough time working what I already ate off... Your dropping pounds like flies on the first day of winter!

Thanks guys... I think you're right... I just need to focus on eating well overall, and if I stop losing weight, or feel yucky, then look for a solution, but there's no use changing something that isn't broken!

I tried to watch sodium but its so very hard to me. But I had problems with blood pressure in past and was put on medication. Just eating healthier low calorie and fat, with some walking. I'm not on the medicine anymore.
