Hoser's Journal, 03 February 2011

I ran tonight.

I finished a Couch to 5K last spring, tweaked my knee 30 seconds after finishing, and then quit for a long time. Tonight was the night to start back up.

My plan was to start with W3D1 of the C25K, but as I got into it I discovered some of my old stamina. The three-minute run scared me, but I actually managed to do ten without too much effort. Well, I *am* 25 pounds lighter than the last time I did this. I guess it makes a difference.

Congrats! I started a variation of C25k last summer and lasted about a month before quitting and would like to start again - but the extreme cold and snow here is in my way at the moment. Although I guess I could do it on the treadmill at the gym? Are you running in or outside? The thing that discouraged me from starting up again when I lapsed for a few weeks was the idea of starting from week 1 day 1 all over again - so I'm interested to know how starting up from week 3 works for you.

I run on a treadmill, and much prefer it. The weather is perfectly controlled. I don't have to worry about carrying keys and phone and water. I don't have to dodge cars, people, dog detritus, etc. I'll never trip over a rock or a curb on a treadmill. Plus, I tend to run late at night, and the light is MUCH better at the gym. If I were to injure myself, there would be people around to help me. More than anything, I don't have to worry about controlling my speed-- the treadmill does that for me. When I run outside I run too fast and wear myself out.

I get so so bored exercising that the running outside gave me something else to think about - I was running along a pedestrian trail beside Lake Ontario and then into a large park, so there was lots of pretty scenery to distract me from my pain and no cars. The speed thing is an issue though, it's true that I go too fast outside and then blow it. And carrying stuff is a drag. Maybe I'll try the treadmill at my gym and see, til it warms up outside anyway. Thanks.
