crabby Kat's Journal, 23 January 2014

I'm happy to say that all the clouds have blown away. Pretty much.

My cough is gone, no wheezing, and am down to using my inhaler once a day. I've been able to return to Zumba, go out to lunch with friends, prepare foods to freeze for easy healthy meals post-surgery, yay hooray!

My pain levels are fairly high, but I continue to work on my core strengthening to protect my back/SI joint while I'm recovering from my knee replacement. A lot of pain in my foot that has the ruptured fascia; working on my core has pulled all the way down my right leg, which is working harder because of my damaged left leg. My PT discovered that some of it is coming from me raising my toes (for balance) when I do squats.

So many things to remember! Did you know that when you retrain your muscles in your core, your brain is working so hard on that when doing Zumba that you can forget a sequence of moves that you've known for months? Weird, but true. My PT (who has a clinical doctorate in physical therapy) reassured me that my brain wasn't taking a vacation, lol.

I'm trying to remember to keep my body in alignment, knees not going beyond toes in a squat-like move, not raising my toes, using my obliques for moves as opposed to my back; trying to correct the hypermobility in my SI joint. When I bend forward, my pelvis rotates back on the right side. One of my exercises is sitting, bending forward, using my obliques equally and keeping my pelvis stable as I bend. Whew! Small moves can be difficult.

Anyway, I've been eating too much, gained a little weight. I need to get focused so I gain as little weight as possible post-surgery. I'll heal better with less weight, but need proper nutrition. A balancing act that I hope I'm up to. My partner will want to soothe me with goodies, and I will want to be soothed. Perhaps I need to print a big BEFORE picture and post it next to the TV, where my hospital bed will be. Yikes! it will be delivered next Friday.

Oh, back to the plus side; women at the gym yesterday insisted I was still losing weight. I thanked them, but assured them that I hadn't lost more weight. They insisted. Apparently, the core work shows. :o)

I'm taking a lazy day; just before noon and I haven't even showered yet. For breakfast I had a slice of toast made with the whole grain low carb bread I baked, with the pistachio butter I ground at home. Coffee, black.

I did enter the recipe for the bread in my cookbook, recorded journal entries here and on Medhelp's MS and Orthopedic forums, and commented on other's posts. Not like I'm not getting anything done, lol. Resting is vitally important for a body. A shower would feel mighty nice, later, all.

Love the reference to the Core as that's something being discussed in Yoga too. And you may not be losing weight in numbers but maybe your body is shifting in a flattering way? I have had several people tell me 'you've lost a lot of weight since I saw you in the summer' and I think 'uh, no... not a pound..' but maybe it's all just catching up. Enjoy your lazy day - you deserve it. I just got a 'frother' so no black coffee here - having fun making froth :-)

Thank you for commenting on my journal. I now have some great ideas! I always lift my toes for balance so now that is a no no. Thinking of you and praying you have less pain too!
