Johanne's Journal, 27 November 2010

I had Thanksgiving dinner at my oldest son's with his in-laws and yesterday I had a second Thanksgiving dinner with my youngest daughter and her in-laws. I didn't count calories and tried to eat reasonably. The real problem was the gluten. I simply didn't worry about it. Boy am I ill. I went to bed before 8:00 last night and slept for 12 hours. I feel like death warmed over. I guess I'm going to have to start taking my own breads, desserts and gravies to these affairs. I plan to not count calories Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. New Year's Eve isn't a problem because I seldom, if ever, go out and our family doesn't normally do a New Years dinner. I'm so new to the gluten thing and I keep forgetting, this is how I used to always feel. I'm not used to it anymore, THANK GOODNESS.

The nice thing about making mistakes is, today is always new and you have a clean slate to work with. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with much to be thankful for. I did.

Aw, I'm sorry you got sick, Johanne. I see more news items these days about gluten sensitivity and I'm beginning to wonder if my husband has that problem. What are some of your worst symptoms?

Oh, Jo, I am so sorry that you are feeling sooo poorly! It is so hard to change how we eat, when we find that something is suddenly off limits. I took plenty of food that I could eat, and made sure that I made enough for everyone. My middle sis fell in love with the faux broccoli-rice casserole, and called yesterday to ask for the recipe, since she ahd already eaten all that I left for her. And the SF crustless pumpkin pie was so good. They also loved the stuffed, bacon wrapped, jalepeno peppers. Hope that you start feeling better soon, and that your Thanksgiving was wonderful despite getting ill. Have a nice weekend!

I'm sorry that you're not feeling well. It is definitely difficult over the holidays. I had one piece of pumpkin pie and regretted it for the next 24 hours. That's a good idea, bringing some of your own food. That way you know it's safe. Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you everyone for your concern. You're all so sweet. I'll be fine. It takes a few days for the gluten to work its way out of your system. Stef, I would love to have your recipes. Are they in your cookbook? Coco, the short term symptoms (other than the long term ones like your teeth growing in with messed up enamel, severe anemia and others I've had all my life) are mostly intestinal (diarrhea, painful gas, etc., TMI!!!) and I feel half asleep and sluggish with an "almost" headache for a few days. They told me, among other things that I had irritable bowel syndrome. I don't, of course. I recently diagnosed myself and had my Dr. run gluten tests to make sure. I was so angry when they came back. My life might have been so different if I had been diagnosed early. I'm trying to make it better now, and I can if I can just resist certain goodies when I am out of the house. LOL.
