Went to the gym yesterday, woooo!

It's amazing how you can be adamantly against something (or at least completely disinterested) and yet if its for your kids, you'll do it without a second thought.

The last time I went to the gym was in about 1999 (well before my back injury.) I had always thought that it was pointless to join after that because my pain levels would mean that I couldn't do much. Which in retrospect was really an excuse to cover up the real reason, i.e. fear and embarrassment. (I did consider at one point joining a women-only gym, but it turned out there weren't any within my area.)

Anyway, my son's counsellor suggested that he would benefit from doing some strenuous physical exercise to help boost serotonin production, and also as an anger outlet. She proposed kick boxing or karate, but he didn't fancy either of those. So she then suggested the gym. I thought this would be a great opportunity for both me and him to improve our fitness, and in my case to help accelerate my weight loss. (My son definitely doesn't need to lose weight but he would like to build muscle.)

So we went for our induction session last Weds, and yesterday I finally persuaded him to come with me for our first proper session.

I was kind of apprehensive, given how long its been for me, of how I would get on, and particularly how I'd feel this morning. I am a little sore today, but really I'm pleasantly surprised. I did 15 mins on the treadmill, 15 mins cycling, 15 mins cross trainer, 15 mins on the arm bike (this was really really hard) and 5 mins on something called a wave trainer which I've never used before. That one just about killed me! I think I'll move that one to an earlier point in the workout.

I'm not doing any resistance training to begin with, for fear of hurting my back, but I will probably add that in soon - within a couple of weeks for sure. I used to prefer strength training to cardio, but realistically I need to concentrate mainly on cardio for weightloss.

I won't buy a monthly membership yet because I want to see whether Simon will stick it out or not. And me, really!

I'm tempted to join the gym but I don't know that I have the time! It is invigorating and worthwhile, you just need to have the dedication and commitment. Weight graph is looking good!!

Isn't it amazing how tough an arm bike can be! I have never heard of the wave. But gratz on getting to the gym and hopefully your son will continue to come and help motivate you. (And yes, I know how it is about doing it for the kid.)

Thanks all! Chris, I'm lucky because my work schedule, while demanding, also leaves me a lot of free time. Basically I do a 12 hour day, then have the next day off, 12 hour day, day off, etc. So on my working days I don't have time for anything, but I get 7 days off work out of every 14. At the moment, this is a MAJOR PLUS!
