Today I'm starting a one month journey as a carnivore. I know that probably sounds strange, but there are a lot of people on this site who go to the opposite end of the spectrum (herbivore/vegetarian/vegan/etc) so it isn't that big of a leap, is it?

This is really just an experiment to see how I feel eating nothing but meat for a month. I'm basing this experiment on the book Eat Fat & Grow Slim by Richard MacKarness. The premise of the book, clearly stated on the first page, is that "carbohydrates provide calories and nothing else."

Diet Calendar Entries for 01 July 2008:

Interesting experiment and a one month journey should be enough to find out how effective it is for you. I do wonder about the loss of fruits because of the old thing about "scurvy" that seamen use to get because they lacked it. I haven't read the book but Im sure it will cover all that. It will be interesting to see how you feel, so keep us posted. btw.. does it mean just meat, or i see cheese and eggs on your list too... cheese does have calcium so you got that covered!

Scurvy is an interesting topic. I recently read a magazine article written by Vilhjalmur Stefansson (an artic explorer) talked about avoiding scurvy when he ate nothing but meat while living with the Inuit. It was his observation that men who ate the fat from animals avoided it while those who focused on the lean ended up sick. The book does allow for eggs, cheese and milk. It even includes things like lettuce, tomato and dry wine, but that wouldn't be in the spirit of my experiment. I was considering not using eggs and cheese but I've gotten into a good habit eating both regularly and I wouldn't want to mess that up.
