RiverRes's Journal, 09 January 2013

I am so pleased! I went to the doctor yesterday fully expecting to be put on prescription meds for my cholesterol and vitamin D deficiency. I got there, was put on the scale, and was able to demonstrate the 20 pounds I have lost since Oct 2012. My doc told me I am doing everything right in my diet/lifestyle change! Wahoo! My BMI is down nearly 10 points.

Instead of prescriptions for meds, I got recommendations for vitamins! I need to take fish oil. These have calories and fat grams associated with them and so I need to enter them as a "snack/other". I also am taking niacin which should open my vessels and allow me to "flush" cholesterol out of my system. I also need to take a minimum of 4000 IU of Vitamin D every day.

He also said I am doing a "GREAT JOB" and need to continue to exercise and eat good foods (vegetables, limited meat, whole grains, some fruit). Everything I am doing is the right way to lose weight and become heart healthy. My cholesterol/triglyceride issues are genetic and so I just need to manage them and exercise more to get the triglycerides down.

It is one thing to play the game of numbers (i.e. calorie counting, portion control, weight loss, and inches of key parts of the body); but it is quite another to have what I am doing affirmed by my doctor. I was almost giddy. It was the best stamp of approval I could have received.

So, I am here until logging food and exercise for at least 4 more months when my follow up appointment will be scheduled. I am actually looking forward to a doctor's appointment and getting on their scale. I never said that before!

Congrats! I am so happy for you. That is truly great news and having it be confirmed is just that much more amazing. I wish you the best! I'm sure in about four months going to the doctors office will be filled with more good news! :D

I wonder how much of triglyceride levels are really genetic and how much of it is attributable to the fiber free spice free refined starch diet ubiquitous in the USA. My parents had high triglyceride levels too, but they ate white rice almost every day, and they've gotten it under control after eliminating it from their diet. My family doctor casually prescribed a "low carb" diet (!) for my high triglycerides. No explanation, no justification, just low carb diet full stop. I've been doing some literature review and the science behind that seems solid at least. I guess I'll see how theory works out in practice after 90 days.
