BuffyBear's Journal, 06 October 2012

Desperate times call for desperate measures! Therefore, I have come to a compromise with coffee. I can drink as much as I want - just as long as it is black.

This is coming from someone who, just a year ago, was drinking coffee with cream and Equal. I gave up the artificial sweeteners (last New Year's Resolution). Giving up the half & half was this mornings decision.

Theoretically I should save over 300 calories a day by doing this. Realistically, it may not work out that great. I find that without my creamer I feel more hunger. But with a little menu tweaking, I should be able to get past that.

Now for today's thankfulness - I am thankful that I didn't give up the caffeine. Trust me, no one wants to see me in an uncaffeinated state.

Well now. You are definitely tweaking. At this moment, I cannot forsee giving up my Half and Half. It is one of the only dairy products I have held on to. WHEN, I get down to the nitty gritty like you are, I will give it up if I must. I am extremely proud of you for pushing for more weight loss. I think you have done such a beautiful job of it so far. So proud of you. ((HUGS!!))

Buffy it's like with everything you think you can't give up....within a month you don't even miss it....think of your goal :)

Mom - I won't take the credit. I've become impatient. To tell you the truth, I'm sick and tired of it. I want this weight off - by yesterday!

Tracy - Thanks - I know you are right. I will get through this. Just like you giving up salad dressing. That is why your bar is green and mine is still yellow.

I gave up my creamer a couple of months ago too. Don't miss it now. But I have been drinking decaf for about 15 years now so don't miss that either. I just by decaf in a dark roast or french roast variety. I love not having to add the creamer calories to my log. :)

I think Buffy we have to think back in time - in the 50s and 60s where women were really slim - they just used to eat "no frills" food - all the frills are just additional calories we do not need.

Neptunebch - How long before you stopped missing your creamer? Days, weeks or months? I think it took me a whole month to get over my artificial sweeteners.

Tracy - I started going into a stall last winter when I was trying to add "diet" desserts and baked goods. I'm much better off with simple meals - although I think DH is getting bored. But I'm about to bake him a "real" apple pie so he'll survive.

Back when I was 20 something I started drinking black coffee to help stay slim for my modeling. Then when I stopped modeling I added creamer back when I was 40 something. So I guess I have always been okay with black coffee but it has to be really good coffee and hot too. Good luck!

But to answer your question - this time it only took about a week.

Neptune - Thanks. Maybe I secretly want to be a model - LOL.

Buffy, believe me, I know all about that impatience to get this darn journey over with! Of course, it's not really "over," but I can tell you it's a whole different feeling after you hit that goal number. As far as the creamer is concerned, the hunger you feel without it is probably due to not having the fat. It's a really hard choice....keep the fat and keep hunger at bay...OR get rid of the creamer, eliminating the fat and calories, and fight on through the hunger to get to goal sooner. The good news is that once you're in Maintenance, it's the FAT you add back in to put yourself in equilibrium, so you could probably go back to having your creamer then.

As an absolute NON coffee drinker person, I can't exactly relate to that part. However, trying to create an equilibrium between our wants/habits & goals, I struggle with on a daily basis. I had to take a good hard look at what I was doing too & did my best to determine what I could REALLY without. I love butter, always have, always will. But to conquer the numbers game & had to cut DOWN on it...not off completely. So, maybe I have a goofy question...can you dilute the creamer a bit, or is that just a totaly stupid suggestion?

Wow - I am so glad you are doing well with loss - you are closer to goal every day! If you can't make it without the half and half, have you ever tried low-fat or non-fat half and half? I suppose you want to eliminate it but I could not drink my coffee black - it would be tough. I just use 2% milk in my coffee only - seems rich enough to me.

Say it isn't so Buff, lol. Years ago I was totally a SUGAR and 1/2&1/2 girl and the first time I did Atkins I developed a taste for heavy cream -- yum!! My coffee is rich a satisfying and I usually only have 1 maybe 2 cups a day so 100 to 200 calories and minimal carb action. I don't see myself giving it up ever, lol. I justify by saying to myself that I NEED that fat and since my cholestrol was only 149 I give myself permission :)
