Challenges today in life. Our generator would not start this morning. Since we rely on it for power that isn't a good thing. Hubby is at home, will call a friend to take a look at it and if we can't figure out the problem he'll be headed to Spokane to the shop to have it looked at. I'm trying not to be completely discouraged but am struggling. It is a power crisis and a financial crisis all wrapped up into one. I hope it is something simple ... sometimes I wish our life was simpler.

Let's see if I can rustle up five things I am grateful for ...

1. it is supposed to warm up into the teens, maybe even low 20's during the day today
2. the house was warm this morning
3. discovered a crack in a window and covered it which should help with keeping the house warm
4. at least we have someone to call to help us
5. a fun visit with a set of twins on my caseload yesterday afternoon.

I guess the timing of "crises" is never really good ... and I'm sure this will resolve one way or another. All I can do is take it a step at a time ... and fortunately we have flexibility in our jobs to take care of things when they come up without negative consequences with our employers. UGH. Sorry I'm not more "upbeat" today ... I feel beat down.

What kind of work do you do? I forget. You are in the state that our adoption agency is in, I think. I hope you get your generator back on. Are you staying warm at least? I hope so. I am so not a warm person. Hugs to you.

I am a marriage family therapist by trade and work for an early intervention program serving children birth to three in Idaho. Yes, we are able to stay warm. Thanks!

I am hoping it is something simple too! If it's warming up, I hope that means it's sunny. A nice walk in the sun this time of year always helps--especially if you have snow on the ground reflecting the sun and making everything look bright and shiny. You're down but you're still focusing on the positives. Let us know what happens with the generator.

I hate it when things all of the sudden break, and you don't know how much it will cost. Not in the same league as your generator, but over the summer out lawn mower died, and we had to take it in. Lifes little suprises!!! Who said being a home owner was a good thing??? LOL At least you don't need the generator for heat!!!

MOTG - so true!! The silver lining in the cloud I suppose!!! Still waiting for hubby to call me ... I have to leave soon for a home visit ... trying to stay calm!!! Where are the doughnuts???? LOL!!!

I understand you so well, with equipment that decides to break anytime, especially when it's not a good time. here at the farm it happens very often. and when you live far in the country, everything is more difficult. hopefully it will be fixed soon. at least you have fire to stay warm. I wish everything is back to normal very soon!

Thanks Jessy. Sometimes I wonder if we were crazy to move out where we live. Most of the time I LOVE it.

Oh my...did I jinx you with my power outage story yesterday????

Update my friends ... turns out the generator is fine but the battery was not. Hubby called and he was on his way to purchase a new battery for the generator. Much better than needing to haul the generator to the shop ... a 2 1/2 hour drive from our home. I love being off the grid except when something like this happens. Twilight ... you might have jinxed us but I doubt it!! I wasn't sure I was ready to give up showers and deal with the cold temps. At least that crisis is resolved ... I hope!!!

I'm so glad your generator problems turned out to be just a battery. Having no power is the pits. Like you I feel a bit crazy having made the decision to move out here, but love living in the sticks. We're not so far as you from a town - its only 30miles or so. We have a village 8 miles away but have to go to town for anything major. Touch wood we've not had any power outages yet this year. I can do a mean stew on top of the wood burner though if needs be

on the radio (the New York station we get has an affiliate in Des Moines), they said there was a huge snow storm, and I think I remember you saying you were out in Iowa. So I hope that the storm hasn't affected you too bad. (I'm not too great with the geography of much more than the Northeast, sorry) But I'm happy to hear the generator problem wasn't too dire. And since you rely on fire to heat your home, I bet your house constantly smells like what I refer to as "camping." And that makes me smile :)

So glad it was just a battery problem - where's the Energizer bunny when you need him?! I feel bad that you're feeling beat down. Would a hug help? (((((((hugs)))))))

Thank God it was just the battery. Look on the bright side even though you were feeling down you managed to still write your five. I hope you have a much better day tomorrow! Remember we are supposed to SMILE!

allicat ... I'm in Idaho not Iowa but thanks for the thoughts!! Actually my home doesn't smell like camping to me ... it's not like an open fire in a wood stove. Amy ... yes ... thanks for the hug ... I could use a kazillion of them ... let's send some to Flaxseed too ... and everyone else for that matter!! I'm home now and glad to be. Hubby ended up staying here all day so the house was NOT cold when I arrived. Very nice. It did warm up to 20 today so I'm sure that helped too. Today was just hard all around. Bad news about several of the families I work with ... just hard. Somedays are like that ... as Alexander's mother would say (from the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, Very Bad Day), even in Australia ... or in my case ... even in Idaho!!

Hug-hug-hug-hug-hug-hug-hug-hug! That's eight medium sized hugs from your friend Poet. Seems things are breaking down all over the place. We have replaced a clothes dryer, a Bunn Coffee Maker, and a car battery this month. Last night our old dish washer sounded like a TURBO JET taking off for flight. What's next? You did an AWESOME JOB with your positivity in light of the generator situation. Keep rockin' it up out in beautiful Idaho! Okay? Okay!

I'm glad to read about the battery. what I hate about the power outage, is the water outage that goes with! I live with the fear of burst pipes, here the temperatures go so low it doesn't take very long to freeze! I looked on the map and actually Spokane is not very far from Calgary, you must have the same kind of winter than we have here...

Jessy - I agree with you. The worse part is the water situation. I'm actually in Sandpoint, which is just about 60 miles or so south of the Canadian border. I imagine our winters are similar!! Here's to NO FROZEN PIPES!!! Take care!
