My right foot went south Wednesday so I was in agony all day yesterday and last night, getting up 8 times or more for the potty. (diabetes related)

I am seriously contemplating retirement the end of December. These pain issues are getting more stressful for me and I can't stay home until I'm better. I still have the shoulder pain and struggles from my fall on the ice in February...getting ready for work. I don't want to deal with the rage from bosses when I take an ice day they didn't approve and hear about all the things I SHOULD have done. This is my second fall on the ice, same scenario and both shoulders injured.

I'll think about how much notice to give. We get our bonus in December and I want that. So perhaps by Friday, Dec. 31st, I can go?

I've been there going on 24 years (February) and have worked for 42 years and am ready to be home.

Thank you so very much! Looking at my calendar, that gives me 12 weeks to plan and lay with my budget. I did take today as my last sick day. We get 4 a year. I will rest, pray, read, drink coffee and take care of myself. I will get my work done on the weekend....and still be on schedule. The ice terrifies me and in February, I had no gloves on, a thin jacket and lay on the ground yelling for help for close to 10 minutes. I was shaky all day after that experience.

Ask someone about taxes, I heard that sometimes it's worth it to work a few days in the new year before retiring. Can't really remember why, maybe to be able to contribute to retirement plans.

Do you wear those real simple crampons on your shoes. Easy to put on and take off. Miracle little things. I live in Southern California so never need them here but I had a Ranch up in Sequoia and in winter when I was up there I wore them all the time. No problems. And they are pretty cheap.

Wishing you the best! It sounds like you are ready. Retirement is great as long as you plan for it. I love the freedom!

I’m doing soft retirement right now (just doing vacation coverage). It is quite an adjustment. Make sure your have a solid plan for health insurance (or maybe you aren’t US). It solidly is my toughest challenge now.

Jenna, I have some Yak Traks and honestly didn't think of them back in February. I got them after that first fall. Thanks for the reminder. Our sidewalks and driveway here at the complex are not de-iced and I lay on the ground, yelling for help in February until the manager and 2 guys came to help me. The chronic foot pain is due to neuropathy and arthritis. It's been an issue since 2007....and the left foot got involved a couple of years after the right...and I am so thankful they have only gone out at the same time about 3 times in all those years. Thank you Diana and SparkKG. I'm on Social Security, plus my job, have some savings towards retirement. No travel etc. for me so I plan to be home until time for Heaven. I'll be 69 in December....and yep...I feel ready to go.

Brendabradshaw— and anyone else interested. A simple, effective cheap way to get attention whether a fall, a mugging, scared, ill, etc. is to always wear a whistle around your neck. Go to a sports/camping store and buy a rescue whistle. They are made to require fry little effort to blow and they are extremely loud. I once went out on a search and rescue mission looking for a male hiker hiking alone. I wasn’t there when they found him but he was dead. He was lying in some bushes just off the trail but he had sustained a chest injury and he was unable to call out loud enough to alert several people who walked right past him and didn’t see him. With that whistle he could easily have gotten help. I wear one almost all the time when I hike alone and when I am out alone at night. Great security feature.

Kenna, thank you for that tip as well. I had given my Mom one as she fell a lot, turned her scooter over etc. and the one time she used it, nobody came. But...most of the tenants at her complex were seniors, like herself but someone could have called for help. I tried to get her to use cautionary measures and now I need them myself! I did order an emergency call thing after this fall, but like my phone, it won't help me much, wadded up in my purse, inside my car. I need a preemptive plan in place and to stay aware of my surroundings and safety. Oh my God...that's so very sad and I know there have to be other similar instances with the same end result. Hurts my heart. Again...thank you!
