Sheawyn's Journal, 27 June 2021

A big day for me. After being served a couple too many curveballs over the past month, I’ve made the decision to go back onto anti-depressants. Mixed feelings, because last time I was on anti-depressants after more than a year of undiagnosed post-natal depression, I gained nearly fifteen kilograms in a year, which caused other issues.

But I know if I don’t look after my mental health properly I can’t be the mother and wife I want to be. So I would rather take the medication I know will help me and focus on healthy eating and exercise, rather than spiralling deeper into the dark. And this time I have FatSecret to help me keep track of things!

Hopefully you can find out if you can switch meds to ones that work better. Won’t cause weight gain. I’m sure there are a few people on this sight using antidepressants. Hopefully they can suggest one that has worked for them. Anyone?

Hey, I'll definitely keep you in my prayers...It's such a great thing that you're prioritising your mental health... Wishing you all the best even as you start taking your meds...Fatgirlslim1982, has a solid suggestion, there might just be meds that can help and still be able to lose and keep the weight off. All the best honestly 🌻

Hi Sheawyn. So sorry to hear about that. I am also on anti depressants, and it scared me too.. but again I also totally agree that your mental health should be your number one priority... no point looking great on the outside, but feeling horrible on the inside. You can do this. I love following your journey, wishing you all the best xx

Also not sure if you've heard of Cilift? it's labeled as a mild antidepressant, but my doctor says it's more of a mood stabilizer.. that's what I started on and it was great! Weight gain/increased appetite is not a side effect.. have a look into it.

I have so much empathy for this - I suffered from postnatal depression too and started on antidepressants when my youngest was 2 months and stayed on them for about a year. I know it's a hard choice but your mental health has to come first, everything flows from there and in any case if you aren't coping mentally it has a negative impact on your physical health ❤️all the love and light to you

I was on sertra - it's not the most heavy one but I was still breastfeeding, but I do feel it contributed to my weight gain and holding on to weight from the pregnancy ❤️for what it's worth

Thank you, Wanderlustee, Fatgirlslim, Thilesha, and Waistaway, really appreciate the support. I learnt the hard way that holding up a facade of “fineness” does not help anyone in the long run. I am on Brintellix - my doctor told me it’s the most ‘weight neutral’ of antidepressants that she prescribes. To be fair, I am now wondering if the previous weight gain was due to the meds or due to other things spiralling out of control at the time. But knew in my heart the potential for some weight gain did not put weight the need for help that I need right now, and it’s something that can (hopefully) be managed.
