SPRING RECOMP 2021 - DAY 19
LIFT DAY

Monday is a complete shit show in the gym. There is literally some rando waiting next to every station, yammering into their phone and drooling on the equipment in anticipation. Thought I had beaten the crowd, which I did, just didn't beat em enough....

And these poser squatters are increasingly ridiculous. We do have some legit new kids. I suspect we picked up some college athletes home for the plague. Yesterday, this dude in the adjacent rack was squatting 5 plates plus for doubles, then 4 for his back off work. Best I have seen live.

And next to him we have Cheech and Chong. Dudes were equipped. Rogue shirts, special people shoes, belts and braces and waterz, oh my. Promptly loaded up 4 plates. Not even half squats, knees a flappin. Then, of course, more weight. Something looked a little off... Then I realized, they're a plate heavy on one side of the bar. I had a thought to intervene, but let it pass. Squatting sans rack is a big boy choice and experience is the best teacher, after all. And who in the hell am I anyway? For all my old geriatric ass knows, these fine young gentlemen are reimagining the squat and their set-up is intentional. Or not, as it turns out. I'll leave the full visual to your imagination, but suffice it to say that dude spotting was last seen hi tailing it for cover in the pilates room...

I beat my squat number (10 X 185), less than the lineman next door's warm up, barely made my bench, nearly dropped my incline several reps short of target. Bicep impingement, or whatever the fuck it is, is back in full effect. Felt it coming. Didn't take my time and work through effectively. Or walk away. Paid the price.

Nutrition was not bad, but no OMAD. Steak tacos, broiled to a jheeden inspired toasty melt, and a jumbo yam for lunch. Sushi fest post workout. 2800k.

Out like a light by 730. Up a couple of times overnight, but no eating or insomnia. 12 hours total.

Couple lessons. First - don't rush. Build up slowly to the top lift. Stay focused on your cues and strict on the form. And get back to that "no grinder" standard. Second - you are "flinching" in your lifts. Your hesitance to drop into the hole, slow grind down, especially on early heavy reps, and the bench grinding mid upstroke are all the same thing - fear of pain. Cured with pain free, form perfect reps at lower weight. Here's the rule. Catch yourself flinching - > deload, restart, work back up in smaller increments. Take what you can get and keep it moving.

Onward.

Sun's out!

Keep getting it man. I'm inspired reading your stuff. Know the geared up youngins irritate you but have you seen the slingshot bench press by mark bell? I stumbled on it somewhere. He designed it after he tore a pec and couldn't bench properly. Reviews are really good. I'm not sure if I'll get one or not but many reviews say it helps with injury and pain issues. Just a thought with your bicep issue.

@brews. Appreciate the kind words and the tip. I like Bell and co. They're a quality crew. That said, wraps, gloves, straps, and belts, including the slingshot, are not for me. My assessment is that I am better off directly confronting whatever problem/challenge my deteriorating body presents. BTW Bro, I am an equal opportunity hater! Age matters not. Last Monday I ran some geezer off my bench press. Hit the water fountain pre top set and literally 45 seconds later this clown has all my plates off, moved my towel off the bench and is all primed to go. I considered letting it go, but uh, stayed true to my nature.

I feel you. I beat the hell out of my body growing up. 12 dislocated knee caps with 2 -6" screws in my right knee. 4 or more dislocations to left shoulder I never saw a doc about. Thankfully I still have a good low back. I use wrist and elbow support. I've been doing fairly well with my flat bench gains in the smith. I just need to slow the brain down and realize nothing comes quickly. Although if I remember correctly I've not gotten past 200 in the.past so I'm already doing more currently. As far as people go their goofy. Saw a guy square off one day because his girl wanted the smith. Unfortunately the guy he squared off with was like 6'4 built like a wide receiver. Thin but strong as crap. He backed down after his girl talked him out of it. Funny stuff.

Catastrophic back injury here! Any time anyone can do anything with their back I say heck yeah!! And more power to you!!

@bgr Heard wrt the back stuff. My issue is, indeed, trivial compared to real structural back issues. One thing it has done is give me an appreciation for how challenging it must be to live with that pain on the daily. Hope your alt treatment is successful. Also, are you familiar with the docs doing regenerative stem cell work in Panama? Saw this guy on Rogan, name escapes, who restored a quadriplegic to nearly full function... Interesting stuff....

I'm an idiot. The shoulder/bicep impingement is cause I set up narrow on my back squat yesterday. Noticed at the time and reset, but still too narrow. Set up press width. Oh well. At least I figured it out.

Obviously I do not lift heavy bench stuff, but I have learned over time form is everything in weight work - and slow movement, too. I use dumbbells anywhere from 10lbs to 60lbs depending upon the move...the slower I move the more result.
