Last day of the fast.

I didn't exercise yesterday :( I had to go out of the office for business and even had to sit in a restaurant with my coworkers drinking water while they ate. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be because when I looked at their huge piles of food I knew I could not possibly eat so much food.

However, I was reminded why I am fasting rather than dieting. If I were dieting I would have wanted to have "just a little". Most of the people on this site can do that if they make their mind up to it. However, 8 years of dieting history on this site has shown me that I am not one of those people. I now realize that when I eat, I eat until I FEEL full. Not when I AM full, but when I FEEL the EMOTION of being full. This level changes with stress and time. The worst part is I want to "feel full" all the time.

So glad I found fasting as a tool. It started off with just "no solid food". I was still drinking 400 calorie Starbucks coffees for emotional reasons, but it brought my calories wayyy down.

However, when I got down to just water, that is when I finally, for the first time in my life, had to confront my unhealthy relationship with food. However, I was able to do it while feeling no hunger. I was able to learn how to get through a day without using food as an emotional crutch.

Tomorrow I go on a 10 day vacation and decided to break my current fast. My plan is to go to one meal a day. Have I learned anything that will stick?

@MillaLite - Thank you so much for your support. In the "real world" people tell me I am crazy and wonder why I would do such a thing. I spend a lot of time on FS to get the support to not give up.

Yeah! You learned that you eat to feel emotionally satisfied, as do I, and I suspect as do many of us. So when you're enjoying your daily meal on your vacation, remind yourself to savor each bite as you taste it, and that "food is fuel, nothing more." And I'm sured you've learned some ways to get your need for emotional fulfillment met without eating over this time. Remind yourself to use those. Also, don't put much stock in what people who criticize you in the real world say. Everyone likes to think their way is the only way to success, but there are lots of different paths. If you've found one that's taking you where you want to go, who cares if it's not the right path for someone else? And lastly, I am so jealous of your self-discipline. I wish I had half of it.

I've just started trying to do short fasts of 16 hours and will hopefully increase them as my body adjusts took about a week before I wasn't hungry in the mornings when I woke up and now I'm good making to lunch without any discomfort. Your post was very insightful and I too have been trying to understand my relationship with food, my current mantra is food is not for pleasure, it helps a bit, but still have a lot of work to do:) Good luck

@Toumina - Thank you so much for the kind words and the support. Everything you mention is what my plan is!

@Tbaygirl - I also started small. Shifting to "no solid food" was a "crutch" that actually had me taking in more calories than an honest 16:8 like you, but I have no will power so I had to use "baby baby steps" :) You are lucky to have the strength to do what you're doing. Your April numbers look great :)

You are doing so well!! The hardest part of losing weight is facing the demon of food addiction. Its hard because its not like drugs or alcohol, food is something that people need to survive. You have to learn the balance of what you "need" vs what you "want" and thats the hard part. You are conquering that!! I am so happy for you!
