I'm hoping for a loss/same weight when I step on the scale on Saturday, but I am mentally preparing for a gain after spending last weekend in Austin.
This week I've been working at portion sizes. On Slow Carb, I'm permitted to eat basically as much as I want of the approved foods (meat, beans, and vegetables), but I am well aware that eating like that will never work once I'm reach my goal, and wean myself to a regular healthy eating habit. What better time to start on portions than the present? This line of thought came about after watching My 600 Pound Life with my mom, when I mentioned to her that I didn't think over eating was my problem, just that I was eating the wrong things, which caused my weight gain. She said she wasn't so sure, as she watched me eat a 10 oz steak at Mimi's that very morning. I initially brushed off the comment, because as I said on SCD I can eat until full/satisfied, and it's been working for me so far. My gains have been entirely my own fault, from not following the plan over the holidays (and our minibreak last weekend). But I have been thinking about it more and more, and I do believe she is right. So, I'm working on portion sizes, and slower eating so that I may better know when I am full. I must also resist the last few bites of something when I am full, and not eat it just because it is there.

It doesn't matter what eating plan you choose, if you want to lose weight you still have to eat LESS. Portion control is VERY important, and a 10 oz steak, while not unreasonable, is not a low-calorie item. "Eat all you want and still lose weight" is a beloved myth - we need to realize that it simply isn't true. It's not just eating the right stuff, but eating the right AMOUNT of the right stuff. I was eating healthy for a long time, but didn't start losing until I started logging what I was eating and counting calories. I think you are on the right track with portion sizes - best of luck to you!

I think your plan to start watching portion size is a good one. Don't beat yourself about the scale this time, vacations are hard on all of us. I'm a little worried about this year my DH has 3 planned this year it's a cass with use it or loose it on one of them (time share) so we planned a trip for Christmas week should be interesting. But being away so much is hard and I've got 2 more planned to see my kids.

You are wise to keep an eye on the future and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle when you get beyond the weight loss part. Being aware of portion size can be a big part of that. Also, since you are on a plan that lets you eat until you are satisfied, I would recommend that you slow down your eating. Pay attention to your body's clues. I read somewhere that most people will set their fork down at some point in the meal. The article said this could be a subconscious hint that you have eaten a sufficient amount, although most people just pick that fork right back up and continue their meal. Slowing down helps you eat less and realize you are full in a more timely manner.
