yfritz's Journal, 10 September 2021

A few setbacks. The shoulder pain has grown intense, triggering nausea, reducing sleep, appetite and swim time. I can’t lift my bike to load it onto the rack, which means no trail biking. The kid instructor got fired. I now resort to indoor biking; boredom would be the most daunting obstacle.

The stationary bike at the gym is equipped with a TV, which was showing the vaccine news ad nauseam, hardly engaging, and I thought about leaving, thinking that I couldn’t pedal in such a vacuous state of mind. Suddenly someone with an RBG shirt walked by. I immediately recalled that I have been meaning to listen to some of the late justice’s favorite operas. For years I disliked Puccini. Too melodramatic. But today RBG was unrelenting, urging me to activate the stationary bike and raise the opera curtain.

I opened Spotify and selected Tosca, one of RBG’s beloved recordings. This opera cuts to the chase without a tedious overture. No warm up. Seamless lament, agony, malice. I kept pedaling without even remembering that I was pedaling. Folks, the opera villain mercilessly sustained my bike speed above 90rpm. Oh how evil and delicious the legendary voice of Tito Gobbi always is! I had to stop at the middle of the act II today, because the villain’s cruelity knew no bounds and I almost screamed “o Scarpia carnefice!!” with wretched Cavaradossi. Total 60 minutes. Drenched in sweat. Nausea gone. The Notorious RBG delivers again.

Puccini: Tosca (Maria Callas, Tito Gobbi, Royal Opera House, London 1964)

We dearly missed her last week more than Puccini, that did not take long. Sorry to hear about your shoulder.

Eral I thought you missed Maria Callas before I realized you were talking about RBG. Thank you for your support, often I feel like I can’t mention the justice’s name without upsetting a few people. Yes I miss her dearly.

Lovely recording! I have been in Tosca. The music is wonderful. RBG was one in a million, and I miss her.

My 3rd cousin was a pretty prominent opera singer who was a Wagnerian. He lived up in Tiberon in San Francisco. I was fortunate to see him sing once in full regalia but whenever he was back in SF I would go have dinner with his family and he would sing for me. At the time I didn’t have a true appreciation of opera but loved to hear him sing. He died I think the late sixties or early 70s at about 65 or 66. His name was Jess Thomas

Liz, no matter how terrible its history is, this country keeps producing people like RBG, so I am hopeful. Do you subscribe to The New Yorker? Alex Ross made a list of RBG’s beloved operas. It’s different from what Google says. I tend to trust Alex, he is the reason why I pay to read The New Yorker.

OMG Kenna, Jess Thomas is a well known tenor, I’ve seen his pictures. I was never into Wagner’s work so I regret I’ve never listened to his recordings. But last year I changed my mind and I did listen the Ring Cycle. Your cousin is on Spotify, I will choose his recordings next time I decide to spend an evening with Wagner. Thank you for sharing! I hope your daughter is feeling better today.

Sorry U R hurting. I like Pucini, exboss got me tickets for xmas. Maybe that's why I liked it. Sentimental value. I am a huge Madam butterfly fan. Friend made me spend $$ for one season of opera. I love her for it. Other than that I'm a lightweight in classical music. I have exposure b/c of parents. I'm glad for it.

Yfritz— daughter is doing well thankfully. Sense of smell has not started to return yet, but we will see. Her husband I’d still feeling pretty punk bu no worse and no symptoms that are truly concerning. I’m glad you knew who Jess was. An amazing man with the greatest stories about all the things that had happened to him on tour. The royals he met, the castles and palaces he stayed in. It was so fun and he was an awesome cook. I really enjoyed spending time with him. I was just a hippie kid living in SF but he always treated me like a queen and we had so much fun.. just a normal guy.

Appache, I’m glad you didn’t need a surgery but I assume that you are still in a lot of pain. I hope the treatment will work for you soon.

ACB, I need a boss like that. My boss gave us leftover Halloween candies for the nurses week, which was in May. Fan fact: I tend to be an insufferable music snob⚠️☣️☢️ Heavyweight champion.

Kenna, I wish your daughter and her husband a quick recovery. And, please take good care of yourself. Somehow covid seems trickier and more rampant this year. Thank you for sharing your memories of Mr Thomas.
