Some people eat these. Anyway, this is the first Brood X cicada I’ve seen even though we are suppose to be in one of the highest outbreak neighborhoods. They’re coming. Will take more pictures at the height of it.

They are very mysterious. Cicadas exist in Japan, but we don’t eat them even though we eat raw fishes.🤣

My parents are in VA and they've started sending me daily updates. They're on their way! (Sidenote, my ag classes in uni back in the late aughts were very interested in developing insect farming as sustainable protein sources. It would be hard to get that to fly - ahahahaha - in the western world, but evolutionarily speaking, insects have probably been a staple in our diet longer than they haven't been. Environmentally and nutritionally speaking, they're astounding sources of protein and incredibly environmentally friendly - much easier to feed and move than cattle, chicken, eggs, etc. That whole realm is fascinating stuff, especially if you consider that all of those benefits will be squelched because so many people think "ew, gross. " No worries - I'm one of them. 😆)

Low carb, low fat, gluten free and pound for pound as much protein as meat. I have eaten my share of bugs during a period of time in my life, but these little critters do nothing to stimulate any desire to snack.

Sassy, there is something to the cicada sounds that i like - but if you've never heard the 17 year cicada's noise, it can be overwhelming. thanks for more recipes Lambie and SK! Hey Helpmechange, i grew up near Bloomington, in Columbus, and can imagine with all the trees in brown county/Hoosier National Forest, there would be a lot there. Yah, 60pack, cool bugs. :) Kenna is touting the dietary benefits of them! And Shrewdness, this 17 year cicada is interesting - check out this article about them losing their bodies to a fungus yet still able to fly and move!!! https://www.wlwt.com/article/dismembered-and-sex-crazed-get-ready-for-zombie-cicadas-in-cincinnati/36490417

I saw that article. I read another article yesterday about the edibility of this particular bug and it said that although eating a limited number would probably do no harm, but there are several reasons why it might not be the best choice for any kind of volume eating. This bug sort of gives me the creeps.

For sure Kenna, in 2004 we had a couple of large dogs and they ate quite a few (maybe we weren’t feeding enough😜😊but then their stomachs got upset and they threw up nasty piles of them. For the rest of the time the dogs remembered and didn’t eat another one. 👍😂

North Georgia seems to be getting inundated with these critters. Here in the Atlanta suburbs I haven’t seen any for which I am thankful. As a kid we had infestations of these hairy worm things, that grew nests in trees. Total mess. And a thing called the 7 year cicada but they don’t come and mass every 7 years. It reached biblical proportions for awhile. Don’t want a repeat of that again!!

Insects are eaten all over the world so I read up on these little creatures thinking maybe they do “festivals” like they do garlic festivals and strawberry events to celebrate the rare occasion and to show the ways this protein packed bug can be used in the culinary world. That does not seem to be the case for many reasons. That’s ok, but as a ground flour I bet they use it somewhere
