Draglist's Journal, 08 February 2014

Today I adjusted my ultimate goal from 195 to 200. Based on my muscle mass and bone weight, 195 would be about 9 percent body fat. I'm aiming for 11 percent, so 200 will put me right on the mark. I'll take the high 190s, but that will come in maintenance mode!

Interesting that you put some real thought into your goal. I wonder how many of us on here have any idea what our goal should be? Mine is just a number from the past - probably not even relevant.

It took me several years to discover that my "ideal" weight was just a dumb number, and struggling to get there was causing a lot of stress and unhealthy patterns. When I realized that my body naturally wants to be about 15 lbs heavier than that, it was a real light bulb moment. 11 % is pretty lean for a dude!! I say take it and run! :)

Totally agree with BuffyBear and Ennaejay - I sometimes wonder if my goal weight is even relevant anymore. Physically I'm in much better shape than I was in my twenties; additionally, I presume my bone and muscle mass are quite different as well. In fact, I've been kicking getting a body composition assessment either with the "Bod Pod" or a "BIA scan". Although, reading your journals, and the data you record from your Tanita scale is quite interesting and I've kicked around getting one of those as well.

Good idea Draglist. I came to the same conclusion a couple of weeks ago. I realized that the 180 target I had picked had been chosen from mid-air with no thought to what that meant in body composition. By targeting a steady body fat percentage, then depending on what your muscle mass & body water percentage is (which moves around some), the amount you should weigh will vary. I have to put a number into FS as a "goal", however, honestly, my goal is going to be a bf%, not a number of pounds.
