Happy Sunday all. I bought some nutritional yeast today and it is a new product for me. I love umami taste and was thinking this may be something I will like. Just wondered what you guys may use it for. Any tips or ideas????

I can only eat this in very light sprinkle quantities, like adding pepper, to people who have reactive digestive tracts I think the expression "like a dose of salts" is appropriate.

@Bearnoggin It's pretty much what it sounds like, a type of yeast (like the kind we bake or brew with, but different). It comes in this sort of flaky powder, and has a taste reminiscent of parmesan cheese. It's really popular in the vegan community for being able to add a savory, cheese-like flavor to their dishes, and I've seen it used a lot as an ingredient in vegan cheeses. It's also chock full of B vitamins (including B12, which is hard for vegans to fit in to their diets), antioxidants, and contains all essential amino acids (another reason why it's such a champ in the vegan world ;)).

when making vegan pinto beans, soups or chili, adding some nutritional yeast can make it taste like you used a chicken stock.

I use it to make cashew cheeses, for scrambled tofu - I kind of use it everywhere.

wow... so many great suggestions- Did not realize so many of you were into this. I put some on my red African stew yesterday and it was great. yeah sort of reminds me of parmesan cheese. I think I will try to make a almond "cheese" with them next

I need to get on board with the nutritional yeast! Twice today I have seen it.

You saw Kenna's post. She made a post about the nutritional values the other day i saw. I made almond butter and tried it with yeast but the yeast did not quite shine in that concoction.

Ahh I just realized it was Mr. Heeden who posted his morning yeast toast pic.

I love it on popcorn and to add it to any dish needing a cheezy taste. I had to go DF completely a couple of years ago.

In your coffee Bill? Never occurred to me. I have started to do spice lattes now though.

Added some to the turkey meatball soup I made. It worked really well for that, I thought.

Draglist, let us know about the kidney function. My hubs has kidney problems and we've been using whey protein to get more calories and protein into him. Is there a bad impact on kidneys that you've heard about?

I just read an article and it sounds like the concern isn't specific to whey protein but just consuming too much protein for someone with kidney disease. So I think we're fine because hubs wasn't eating much as a result of being very anemic and thats why we're supplementing.
