** HOW INSULIN REALLY WORKS **

Having been a member of the Meat Mafia (aka: low-carb/keto lifestyle) for years before just recently, I've seen (and argued) both sides of the debate when it comes to "is insulin bad?"

To someone trying to lose fat without much exercise, insulin seems to be a mortal enemy. To someone trying to get strong or build muscle, it's an absolute necessity!

INSULIN IS SIMPLY A GROWTH HORMONE. Its primary function is to stabilize blood sugar levels. Once glucose in the blood elevates past a certain point, insulin is released into the bloodstream to carry the sugars to a few locations.

OPTION #1: The body has an excess of calories. At this point, the insulin stashes the excess blood sugar into adipose (body fat) for - hopefully - future use.

OPTION #2: The body has had recent vigorous exercise and its muscles are now sending out "distress calls" to the insulin to supply it with the blood sugar to replenish its muscles' "fuel tanks" (called glycogen).

**NOTE: Insulin's secondary duty is to promote muscle growth when able**

See, your body is made of protein and fats and they will be consumed for energy - called "catabolizing" - when there's no glucose in your system.

Carbs that trigger insulin responses prevent muscle loss by supplying an alternate food source. But that same principal also says body fat loss is minimized when insulin is activated. It's a double-edged sword.

However, the mantra of us Bacon & Egg Nazis (low-carbers) was that if you don't spike insulin levels, then no fat can be stored. Sounds logical in theory, right? Except, say you managed to eat 10 pounds of ground beef in a day. No major insulin response, true. But the insane amount of unused calories wouldn't all "leave your body" (toilet fodder)... the body would certainly store some as fat. This is the balance between CICO and managing insulin levels.

So, if you exercise, you have a lot more freedom to pack on the carbs and will suffer minimal fat gains as long as calories remain low enough.

If you're pretty sedentary, be wise and limit them if your calories are beyond that which you actually need.

Looks good, the only problem I have is the notion that you need to limit them. If calories are on point, you're good to go. A calorie surplus still needs to happen regardless of the macro breakdown.

This is SO good to know, Chris!! Thank you for sharing. If you’re someone who is researching diet for weight loss, there is so much contradictory info out there and that’s really confusing. Even though I am sure that it can work for many people, I’m realizing that keto is just another diet trend, like how fat free everything everything was a diet trend back in the day. A lot of the advice around keto and other trendy diets is masquerading as science/evidence-based info. But like why would you put butter in your coffee and turn a 4 calorie drink into a 300 calorie drink?? Save those cals for something not disgusting maybe. It’s amazing how keto is the number one answer now when the question is “how do I lose weight?”. I was looking for a low cal high protein book on Amazon the other day and all of the results were “keto, quick keto, vegan keto, easy keto, etc.” I couldn’t find anything good on CICO, so I gave up. And I remember a month or two ago, I posted a pic of a lunch I had that was prob about 300 cals. It was tilapia, avocado, and rice. And someone asked something like: “why would you eat rice, aren’t you trying to lose weight by following keto?” I mean I am sure it can work because fats and proteins are more filling, but it always confused me how people are so willing to throw actual science and math out of the window and not pay any attention to calories. I really appreciate all the info you post. It answers a lot of questions for myself and I am sure for others.

The healthiest and leanest populations on earth eat a high carb diet. Japan, Italy, etc.

Thanks, Diablo! Yep, I was thinking that too... how there are cultures in the world that eat rice with every meal, so by keto logic, they should all be obese.

Great points. Some people just function better with carbs in their diet... healthy, complex carbs vs processed. Have to figure your own body out because everyone is different. I need carbs or I can’t function well to lift or do intense exercise, but some may function better with less (or more in my case) carbs. I have a daughter and husband with Lyme disease, and they can’t have a lot of carbs because it makes them have neurological symptoms. She manages to exercise well with this diet and is a collegiate athlete. Carbs aren’t demonic, they can be very good for some people. Point is, you need to listen to and follow your body’s lead. But your facts on insulin are spot on! It is essential for muscle is used properly. Any good info on portion sizes vs CICO? I’m a bigger advocate of smaller, frequent meals vs CICO, personally. I can eat a crap ton of calories and not gain a lb if I do so in smaller portions. Just some food for thought :)
