This framework characterizes four stages that most of us go through when learning something new:

Unconscious incompetence
Conscious incompetence
Conscious competence
Unconscious competence
This model is based on the premise that before a learning experience begins, we’re unaware of what or how much we know (or don’t know), and as we learn more we progress through four stages until we reach unconscious competence—that state of being so competent that we can perform the skill or task unconsciously.

This is not a new concept but I like the verbiage. It applies to anything new that we are trying to do or trying to learn. It certainly should apply to everyone on FS who is trying to live a healthier lifestyle.
At first, you don’t know what you don’t know.. you then move to, “gee, I don’t know anything about diet nutrition, macros, vitamins, health”. You make a decision to educate yourself and make choices that affect how the remainder of your life will look like and how good or bad your future health might be. Conscious competence is where you practice what you have learned but it takes effort and mindfulness to keep up the momentum and do it right. Then comes the magic—- unconscious competence. You have developed the HABITS that it takes to maintain your chosen lifestyle without it always being a fight. It just becomes natural. You can sidestep periodically but the habit to continue on is always there..

I see people comment periodically with “you got this”. But in reality many really don’t “got this”. I like— you can do this. Or, do you have a solid plan for developing habits to help you make better choices. Or, does your action plan need tweaking, it is great giving people ATTA BOYS and POOR BABIES, but does it actually have a real benefit for them. Sometimes it seems to me that people are looking for affirmation that “it’s ok”, or they are looking for FORGIVENESS, get absolution (your penance is 2 trips to the gym today) and continue.on doing what they have always done.

The element to treating and/or overcoming obesity is the psychological, emotional component that may be the root cause Of the obsessive compulsive and binge eating in the first place. Until some of those issues are addressed directly the struggle continues.

Very interesting. I was thinking of something similar this morning but to journal it now will seem like I'm copycatting. It was along the lines of 'just think about how hard it is to adjust to the time change ... our bodies get used to routine and it takes about a week to adapt to something that has happened to us twice a year our whole lives. So now translate that to trying to adapt our mind and body to changing the way we think about food. It's not instant and it takes time before it's (if ever) intuitive. I think we all want unconscious competence but if we had it we'd likely not be here. I confess I went off the rails myself when I stopped making this a conscious effort.

Just browsing fs while I wait for my laundry to finish and stumbled upon this brilliant post of yours. And there’s only one comment. How sad. Seems to me a lot of people on fs need to read this. Maybe they have but only one has commented. Many binge eaters here. Very sad. I’ve been researching some info on it. And recognizing some trends in those who post about their binges. Interesting minds. Thank you Kenna for all your knowledge. I do not have any experience with binging or any eating disorder, thank God!!! But feel burdened for those who struggle with this demon. One trend I see, almost always, is that it seems it’s mostly females who deal with this. What was your observation as a nurse??

Wifey9707– I recently attended a 3 day medical seminar on obesity and binge eating was covered pretty extensively your instinct that there are more women affected than men is correct. And it is apparently the most common eating disorder. After attending this conference I planned on sharing some of the insights I gained but have concluded that for the most part people just want to do what they want to do and will ultimately do exactly that. Obesity, and BED (binge eating disorder) is a huge problems. 20-30 % of all obesity is related to BED. the other noted eating disorder that was discussed is NES (night eating syndrome) which has its own definition and criteria. Many people here on FS fall into this category as well. Lots of information out there to be learned. I’m not going to hijack this post any longer. But, significant issues to be overcome for many. Quick fix is not to be had for most.

Kenna - I wondered why I hadn't seen more from your seminar. I hope you'll change your mind because your posts inspire a lot of thought and offer hope to someone like me who's experienced and still fighting eating disorders. I have thought about some of the seemingly lighthearted posts but not with conclusions because I always imagine what people share here in print is likely only telling a portion of the story. Maybe they're putting on a good face. I post a lot of humor and not because I'm not taking this seriously but because I just need to smile sometimes. I'm definitely interested in the night eating syndrome and I know there are others here besides me who could benefit from the insight. You never know where the tipping point will be that makes a difference.

Very interested as well. I’ll be looking to read your comments!!! You are very knowledgeable and even though you’re retired, I think you’re still a nurse at heart ❤️, attending seminars and such. Kudos to you Kenna!! 🥰

Wife9707. — I still have my nursing license and am involved with many people in my world as their patient advocate.. Some have very complicated medical issues and need someone to intervene for them and participate with them in their care to help ensure that they have sufficient information in order to make good decisions. I have continued going to school since I retired— perpetual student. Love it . Keeps me busy and off the streets.
