The Ranch sits on what was holy indian land. The land was taken from them during the depression and made into a logging camp for many of the men who were out of work. They logged the trees, built these cabins and created a town. The Ranch has a one room schoolhouse where the children of our working staff who live on the property attend. When they start middle school they are bused down the steep mountain to the closest school. That little town has a population of 1800.. we also have a non denominational church where A few of our RANCH kids were married. We are now third generation up there.

When we set up the rules and bylaws we all agreed That we wanted to give these kids the childhood that many of us remembered which would allow them to take off, play, get dirty without a parent being with them every second. In order to do that it was agreed that every adult would be responsible for every child and be obligated to intervene if a problem were to be identified. And we did. You stopped whatever negative action was happening and returned the child to his cabin and spoke with the parents. Unbelievable how it worked out. To see kids out at night catching fireflies and frogs and being wild and crazy and filthy dirty. Parents would come sauntering down the road asking after a six year old with a Red shirt— oh yea, just saw him at the horse barn. That doesn’t happen in SoCal.. The Ranch was haunted— we all had our share of sittings of loggers and Indians up in the hills.

The best thing was —- no radio, no TV, no telephones, no cell phone towers. You had to make sure your truck was in tip top shape because otherwise you were going to walk back to the Ranch. Closest hospital was 90 miles away so we had a helipad. The office and security had landlines. Whenever my group went up we registered as medical personnel so they could find us if necessary. We had 3 nurses. Two doctors, a couple of paramedics and several firemen. Issues came up a couple times but no one died. A good thing. But we did put in an Olympic size swimming pool, tennis courts and basketball courts.

Oh how different the world would be if all kids could grow up like we did. I remember my childhood with joy. How many kids will be able to say that in the future.
