I'm a retired telephone/Internet tech. Love crafting, birds, and of course anything technology. I've been a volunteer at the local libraries tutoring English as a second language, citizenship, and crafts to adults for over 30 years.

I have always been overweight (even as a child) and an insulin pen carrying type 2 diabetic for close to 15 years now. Trying to lose weight is a struggle when you have to take insulin. It's been a lifelong battle for me to lose and keep the weight off. The past 20 years has been the hardest. And trying to coordinate carbs with insulin doses is a challenge to say the least

I am trying to find a food program that works best for me. The standard diabetes diet that the doctors and nutritionists direct me to just does not work. The diabetes foundation allows too many carbs, so I am trying to fiddle with it and determine just how many my body is happy with and lose the weight for good. I have a bad habit of staying on diets for about 5 months, doing well, and then blowing it and gaining all the weight, or even more, back. This time I need to find a way to stay motivated.

Fat Secret claims (along with other sources) that I should be eating 1,200 calories per day but that amount is too high for me. I can never lose weight on that many so I try to stuck to around 1,000. Also the standard diabetes diet includes too many calories and way, way, way over the carbs that my body will tolerate without taking more

Anyhow, I want to make a commitment to myself and to Fat Secret that I promise to stick to this diet (with whatever medical modifications I need to make) for at least 1 year which is twice as long as I've lasted in the past. I need to recognize that I will make mistakes, give in to temptation, and at times fall off the wagon, but I promise to get right back on. Most of all I will lose these extra 50 pounds for good this time.

weight tracker glitch
I've had problems when changing things on FS. It seems to get confused and stubborn when you make changes. Are you using the phone app or a computer? I've found the phone app works well for tracking daily food intake but the computer seems to work better when making any other changes. Try using the computer application and see if that behaves better for you. Good luck!

Humira
Dieting while taking any form of insulin requires pretty extreme carb cuts. In order to lose the weight you have to be able to cut out some of that fat storing hormone, which is insulin. Cut the carbs low, test you blood glucose levels often so you don't go hypoglycemic and get the shakes, weakness, dizziness that comes with too low blood glucose. You will be able to cut back on the insulin dosages and loose some weight then. Discuss this with your doctor first. Weight gains when going on insulin is a vicious circle, the only way to break it too hat I've found is to cut the carbs. Aim for 100 grams per day then cut back even more, slowly until you start to lose. Don't forget to test your blood glucose levels, I check mine at least 5 times a day. Have been able to cut my insulin doses in half. Hoping once the weight is all off to be able to stop all insulin. It's a slow process but deep carb cuts are the only thing that's worked for me.

Shaky / Jittery
Shakes and jitters are the main clues to a diabetic that their blood sugar is too low. This can happen to anyone who is dieting too strongly. Get a glucose test kit. It will tell you if your blood sugar is too low. If so, eat something with a bit of protien, carb, and fat in it.... but Just a little. A spoon of peanut butter and a slice or two of apple works for me. Or your problem may be low blood pressure. Home kits for testing both are available in all pharmacies. It's a balancing act, keeping blood sugars and electrolytes, salt, potassium, etc, in balance for some of us. These are reasons you should check with your doctor before and during dieting.

Post gallbladder surgery diet
I keep hearing from people who have had gallbladder surgery that I should never eat certain foods. I had my gallbladder removed over four years ago. I have not ellimited any foods from my diet bease of the gall badder surgery. I eat nearly anything, although ever since childhood I have never been a fan of red meat or pork. Beef in chili only a few times a year but never hamburgers or beef steak and never never any pork products. I do eat poultry and fish and cheeses and eggs. Also was told no nuts by a friend who swears she could not eat them after her gallbladder was removed, huh? I have continued to eat them too with no problems. My cholesterol and triglycerides are very good so could someone please tell what foods I should be avoiding and exactly why. I asked my gastroenterologist and she said don't worry. But I still wonder if I'm harming myself by possibly eating something I shouldn't. Any other gallbladderless folks out there with information.
