Kenna Morton's Journal, 20 August 2018

I have a good friend who is a gastroenterologist and he always tells me that if people actually learned to cook some of their foods properly and to SLOW DOWN AND CHEW THEIR FOOD, that he would be out of a job.

Did you know: Digestion actually starts before you put the food in your mouth. It starts when the body begins to salivate when you see food or smell it. Enzymes are released into the saliva with the intention of mixing with the food when you chew. Those are the enzymes that are needed to break the foods down so that they are digestible. We eat so fast and don’t chew our food— we stuff it in our mouths, give it a one/two chew and swallow— then take another huge mouthful, And wolf it down. Now you have this lump of food in your stomach that your poor body has to figure out how to get rid of.

Did you know: it takes your body a good 15 minutes to register that it is full. But for many of us, the entire meal is eaten in less than 15 minutes. Eventually the mind body connection is such that you think you are starving if you are not bloated full and your stomachs stretched to the max. Mindful eating, purposefully chewing and tasting your food, is a big help and gives your body a chance to do the best job possible for you. It just needs your help.

I am a nurse. When I worked getting to actually get a 30 min. Lunch was rare. If we had 5 minutes to wolf something down we did. Once I retired that was the first thing I put on my “to dol” list— mindful eating. The second was to learn not to sleep in my scrubs — which I ALWAYS did in case I got called out in the middle of the night (constantly). Hehehe

You share a great information, I eat too fast because I used to work all day, in the morning a big cup of coffe and a piece of sweet bread while working , no lunch break, and a big dinner. I was maintain my weight back then, but I know that eating too fast is not good.

It's true... Once I learned that it takes 20 minutes or so for the brain to register "satiety", I ate more slowly and sat back instead of running in for seconds 😉

Something I really need to work on. I eat way to fast from when I was in military - wolf it down get back to rotation.. Even being out now 20yrs I still have that issue. I find myself sitting watching everyone else not even half way done and my plate is clean.

One trick that helps slow down the fast eating problem is to put your fork (or sandwich) down while you chew. Take a sip of water here and there.

Excellent points about eating slowly! I used to talk about that when I taught nutrition - however, that doesn't mean I do it! Sigh
