Broke my fast last night (nearly immediately after the deadline ended) with my normal food - a good keto meal to start, then moving into more 'pleasure' oriented (still low carb) fried/spiced protein.

My blood glucose (BG) after 8 hours was only up ~7 points - pretty amazing for me.

However...due to my eating right after the fast I ended up staying awake past sunrise and (not checking my BG again) woke up a bit past midday.

My waking BG was high even though I estimate I ate only 20g carbs, and my liver should have been glycogen depleted after my fast (4 days). Also, I still feel stuffed, like maybe I still have food in my stomach (is this possible?).

My best guess is that my liver kicked into high gluconeogenesis after I ate a large amount (way over the keto budget) of protein and then did a glucose dump as normal toward the end of my sleep - a later BG reading might shed light on this.

Also, the stuff I ate after the keto meal was a kind of low carb fast food, so maybe my body really doesn't feel good with it while still sensitive after the reset of a fast and so that is what is causing the over-full feeling? I probably need a few cycles of fast/refeed to understand this clearly; hopefully I will be able to eat cleanly on my first day after my next fast. Alternatively, shifting out of a normal diurnal cycle caused my body to go into a kind of panic mode, with various carry on effects.

BG is a pretty complicated process I have found book by Dr Bernstein the most enlightening along with work by Dr Fung and health writer David Mendosa and Jenny rule. A quick Google search will show all of their work. Bernstein speaks much about gastroparesis, delayed stomach emptying along with how BG can vary due to a variety of reasons including the dawn effect etc. Good Luck

My later BG was still pretty high, though not as high as waking. I found Dr. Bernstein a while ago when I was diagnosed. His work is what gave me to courage to stay low-carb in the face of most people not really understanding it at the time. I recently found Dr Fund and I just did my first 4-day home fast. I've started to listen to some podcasts with him. I will look for David Mendosa and Jenny Rule. I hadn't heard about them. Thanks. I'd forgotten about the delayed stomach emptying.

I'm Type II. I keep my net carbs below 20 and I've had fabulous results with my BG and A1c. I have not tried fasting. I'm on insulin and I've had some difficulties. I'm very interested in your experience with this.

Sarah1950, my BG had been inching up for a while and I was too caught up in another project of mine to pay attention or take care of it. Finally, it was too high too often for me to feel anything but scared and so I took action. Eating 1 meal a day, or only eating within a 4 hour window with only water/supplements the other 20 hours, was very helpful keeping things in some control. I was moving to a 4 hour window only every other day (44 hour fast) when I found this site (looking for nutrition info of foods kept bringing me here and I finally looked at the rest of the site). Before my first 44 hour fast finished I saw the Challenge for a 3 day fast, so tried it out. I'm happy I did - seeing the almost normal BG was a real treat for me, and I'm certain a nice relief for my body. [WARNING...since you are using insulin, you have to take care with how you implement fasting. If you decide to fast, first ask others who are on medications about how they do this and what to expect, next talk to your doctor about it to make sure you understand how it might affect your use of medications, and only then try to fast.] Its is very good to hear that eating low-carb has been a help to you. You might want to look into a ketogenic diet (sometimes called just 'keto'), it limits protein a bit too since protein also affects our insulin and BG.
