How do you know, I mead REALLY know if pounds up or down is actually fat, or just water weight?

Are you stronger? That would be one way to tell.

Get a Tanita Scale like Draglist. If you follow his journal, he has very detailed reports on his fat, water, bone density, etc because of the scale.

Clothes fit, monthly comparative pictures of yourself, fat measurements, etc will give you a pretty accurate picture of your fat loss or gain. Water and carb bloat comes and goes on a daily, weekly or even hourly basis. Note that water bloat (due to higher sodium or carb intake) can look and feel a lot like fat...it just expands or contracts tissue a lot quicker than true fat loss/gain. Good luck!!

Also, a pound of water is 454mls or about 15 oz., Two small cups of coffee for me :) Weight comes and goes as we are hydrated or dehydrated....monitoring these weight loss/gain trends over time is important for weight loss or weight maintenence goals... but also equally important is trying to keep your lean tissue (muscle) as you lose your excess fat. Maintaining lean body mass will flatten a weight loss trend line but will be very beneficial in helping maintain any loss into the the future.
