I'm a strong advocate to work on the psychological reasons why you overeat or don't take good care of yourself. I attend individual counselling at least once or twice a month, as well as attend group therapy once a week.
I discovered that my parents didn't provide good "self-care" examples. My mother being an adult-child of an alcoholic parent, and my step-dad having been bullied and neglected as a child/teenager. My step-dad had his first heart attack at the age of 33, which tells you a lot. In his 50's he had to have a triple bypass.
