ceekaye's Journal, 13 December 2015

The 11th and 12th of December were two days of shopping. Took my mom shopping (she is wheelchair-bound) for about 6 hours. Glad i ate broccoli and black beans before we left the house at noon. By the time it was 5 pm i was hungry again. I wound up eating iceberg lettuce with some tomatoes and onions that were passed off as a salad, and some broccoli which was soo bitter tasting (blech!)

I cannot say any of those chain restaurants have very much in the way of nutritious food choices.

Chili's used salted tomatoes from a can or something...i found out after i took a big ol bite. Glad i ask the waitress before ordering about ingredients...yes, they use oil in the black beans. Bummer, guess it's just lettuce and a few sprigs of steamed broccoli.

Sunday was no better. At least I made a nice pound of salad for the road when we left the house.

Again, by the time it was 5 pm i was ready for some food. We wound up at a Texas Roadhouse and i had another helping of a minimal salad with red wine vinegar and a small cup of steamed broccoli and carrots.

The roadkill - er-roadhouse menu features a Country Veg platter - any 4 veggies for $8.99. Hey, sounds great!

Wait, oh, huh - oil and bacon in the green beans? Hmm, not those;
i guess the house salad with no cheese or eggs please.

What?! Oil on the baked potato? Even on the baked sweet potato? Who the hell douses potatoes in oil for baking?! Many of those restaurants do apparently.

Be careful dieters...eating out is super-tough to do! Be ready to eat around a cup of iceberg lettuce a piece or two of other raw veggies, and if you're lucky some steamed carrots or broccoli.

I had a major craving for popcorn yesterday. I did not give in! i remembered stepping on the scale and seeing the number down to 158.0 in the morning...the thought of reaching my goal weight keeps me going strong.

I have come to understand that when it comes to fruit, nuts and seeds, people must be mindful of their calorie intake:

If weight loss is a goal, those nuts & seeds cannot dominate.
They are healthy and satisfying accessories to a salad that won't break the bank if you limit them to less than an ounce per day.

For me, fruits will be treated the same way. Berries and oranges are low in calories, and bananas are the most calories for me so i limit myself to a half. (i like banana berry sorbet with ground flax seeds)

Beans and veggie calories remain the bulk of the weight-conscious menu. That said, I am using nuts and seeds in my salad dressing.

This morning i made a sesame orange dressing. Oranges, toasted sesame seeds, some orange vinegar, a tablespoon of ginger - threw it all in the blender. Only used about 1/4 of it for my breakfast pound of salad. I have enough for another couple of days-worth of salads!

Wow. Homemade dressings are just too good. 8) How is it i have missed out on this part of my life for so long?! LOL

After my raw veggies, i ate a pound of steamed broccoli sprinkled with lemon, and then 1-1/2 cups of black beans with chili powder. I finished my meal with a homemade black bean brownie. Yep, just ate one! It was really good.

Initially i made the brownies with my family in-mind...i wanted them to try the brownies. Here's where i went wrong: I let them see the brownies being made. Oncce they saw the black beans in there, they decided they would not like them.
Oh well, more for me - about 10 day's worth of brownies to eat. Maybe i will freeze them?

I bought King Oyster Mushrooms from the asian market last week...they looked so awesome i had to buy them.
My dinner tonite will involve them somehow - maybe in a soup with onions & garlic.
