TXSnowman's Journal, 17 October 2015

It's been a very interesting year, but hopefully life is getting back to normal.

It's been the absolute busiest year for my office ever. Even with a new full-time assistant, I've only had 4 weekdays off since April 15th, and I've worked most Saturdays as well.

I Thought I had everything under control at the beginning of the year. Good diet, regular exercise and a good body fat percentage. Mid-January I had my semi-annual check-up with my general practitioner and my BP was 180 over 130. She put me on some heavier meds. A week later, I'm in the ER with a bp of 220 over 160. They got it down to 160 over 120, but it kept going up again. So its off to the cardiologist who put me on hydralazine and carvedilol and losartan. The BP got wonderfully under control. Side effect: Take hydralazine 4 times per day; each dose knocks me out for 5 hours. So, I was drowsy and lethargic all day long. To help matters out, my English Springer Spaniel who was my daily hiking buddy got diagnosed with very aggressive lymphoma. A few weeks later, our hikes ended and a few weeks later, he passed away. Pretty depressed, I ate a lot of crap and stewed in my sorrow and hydralazine haze. Finally, the coup de tat, my physical in July showed protein in my urine. So its off to the nephrologist who tells me that I have something wrong with my kidneys (which explains the constant lower back pain). Had an ultrasound which didn't help diagnose the problem, so now they want to do a biopsy. I think I'll put that off a while, because the doctor says that although the biopsy will show what's wrong, it won't necessarily tell them how to fix it. So I'm left with a range of outcomes from "It'll go away on its own" to "Dialysis" to "Kidney Transplant".
I finally decided that enough was enough. I cut back on the hydralazine, got off my ass, started exercising again and quit eating crap. The weight's coming back off and I feel a lot better. Still have the back pain, but its tolerable. I hope to get back to goal before the end of the year.

Nice to catch up with you again - and so very very sorry to hear about your beloved pup. I have a cat that, when the time comes, will break my heart. Just remember all of the good times you had with him, the joy he gave you and the joy you gave him too. Sometimes I love the animals in my life more than the humans... On the health issue, I hope you and your doctors figure out what needs to be done - in the meantime nothing like taking control of your life and your health yourself. Good for you and I'm in your corner.
