The homemade apple butter was a success! I kept sugar to a minimum -- 1/4 cup for 4 pounds apples. Next time, I may skip the sugar altogether. Sourdough wheat/rye toast almond butter, apple butter, blueberries & soymilk chai for breakfast

This looks great! What an awesome idea for using a lot of apples!

Looks good. Good job. I would have to skip the sugar as I don't use it. Have not added sugar to anything in years. I don't buy it except for the hummingbirds. I am limited on carbs.

Looks so good!! Wish I had access to an apple tree!

Thanks, ocean_girl! It turned into quite the process. I did eventually wind up cooking it on the stove top and stirring, stirring, stirring

SunnyDay and annamommy - it was tasty stuff. Agnes -- I was able to use up 4 pounds this way, but it barely made a dent 😂

Morticia -- next time I'm going to skip the sugar. It really didn't need it. I only used maybe a little over a fourth of what the recipe I had called for

crboyer -- this is actually a new experience for us. We have never gotten more than a handful off this tree before. Could be we had so much rain this year

Writingwyo, if you’re looking for more ideas to use the apples, I would suggest looking up recipes for red cabbage and apple salad. No sugar required. With nuts and/or an hard boiled egg, it could be a meal in itself. That is, if you don’t detest cabbage, as many do. It’s my favorite salad. In fact, I’m making one today!

How long do you think this will last in the fridge and do you think it would freeze well? I sometimes buy bags of apples but lack ideas on how to use them besides pie!

That sounds heavenly, Agnes, and I love cabbage. Can you make it with green cabbage? I know it wouldn't be as pretty, but I have green cabbage already in the house.

Thanks, StormsGirl! honeebuns, honestly, I have no clue on either question. I don't know any reason it wouldn't freeze well, and I'm going to find out, because there's no way we can go through all of this fast enough

Sound delicious.

I’ve never made it with green cabbage, but that should work, too. I dress my salad with a simple mix of extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice (white wine vinegar is also good), salt, pepper and, if I have it, a bit of grated ginger. Make sure to chop or shred the cabbage quite finely if you are going to eat it raw.

you could can it: https://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can_02/apple_butter.html there's a low sugar version as well: https://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can_02/apple_butter_reduced.html it's important to note that for canning the recipes can't be changed because they're tested for safety. otherwise freezing is a great option!

looks yummy

That could be fun, Asarver! I have more freezer space than shelf space, though, and no canning equipment, so I'll probably stick with freezing for now
