I had a brief discussion with my son this morning. On the news here, there is a fitness segment, and they bring someone in (generally from the Ideal Weight Loss program) to demonstrate and practice some exercises. Their guest today is probably not where she wants to be on her weight loss journey yet, and so my son said, "Look she has a Muffin Top!" and began to giggle. (He's 10, so he's pretty easily amused, especially when he thinks he said something funny.) I asked him why it was o.k. to laugh at that, and told him it was body-shaming. He went very solemn very quickly. I told he had no right to do that, because he has never struggled with his weight, and he has no idea what she has or hasn't done to have that "Muffin Top." *Sigh* Apparently I have work to do with my kiddos. I know we're all here on FS to lose weight for our various reasons, and that's great, but I am never o.k. with body-shaming. I am never o.k. with someone looking at another person and telling them they should put the fork down. It's a form of bullying. We all have different reasons for not being at the weight we wish we could be at. Some people would probably ridicule me when I wear a tank top, because I still have a "Muffin Top" but damn it, I look a whole lot damned better than I did 25 pounds ago, and feeling like I can show that off keeps me going. Everyone else is welcomed to be just as ashamed of my body as they want to be, but I'm not anymore. I'm damned proud of what I accomplished so far. And I imagine the woman on the television is probably pretty damned proud of herself for what she's accomplished since she started too.

I wholly applaud this! Your son probably thought it was funny because it included the word 'muffin', but he heard it somewhere, and likely will again, but now he's also heard you.
