I find if I stay to having a little bit of all the foods I love, maybe sharing a portion with someone else, it is waaaaaay easier to keep the diet reasonable.

I find if I AM picking up that impulse snack or sweet, I notice a moment right as I am unwrapping it or about to eat it, where I think "oh wait, is this a good idea?" ... Usually in the past my idea tree would include "I already unwrapped it, I must eat it... I touched it, so I have to eat it. My germs are on it." And even having the thought as I have taken the first bite.. "Is this really helpful to my goals?" .... and thoughts like "I am already eating it, I can't turn back now. Don't waste the rest, it:s really good. Don't leave the bites uneven, even the sides out a bit more. Someone else may throw it out if you leave it on the plate/counter, that would be a shame.. don't waste the craftsmanship"

BUT NOW realizing what was going on in my mind.... I can still be unwrapping the chocolate, or even have taken a bite of that cake or ice cream, the bag of chips etc... and my mind will go "Yeah, this is good, but it might not be the healthiest choice for this moment, can I save it for later? One bite, or a few bites is okay, we can take this home so the sugar doesn't overwhelm the system... we can prolong enjoyment by enjoying it over time slowly with different meals. I know it might not be as fresh later but you are eating this as something to savor, not as a main meal to be full on. Yes I can put this away. Yes I can reach for something else. This is fine. Noone will take it off the counter, and if they do, they will probably make up for it later with something better, and you get to share the enjoyment, which is why you reached for the yumminess in the first place, enjoying life."

That helps a lot. And reminding myself to drink water, soups, smoothies.
