jwsplatjw's Journal, 21 August 2014

I've been reading, and commenting, on journal entries where folks are restricting their kcals so much that they are literally starving themselves. Then they are asking why do I feel poor? Why have I stopped loosing fat? Why has my motivation gone? It's because you are starving!!! Wow. The internet is full of information loads of crap but to a skeptical reader there is plenty of solid science published here too. Lowering sugar intake is a great way to kick start fat loss. Lowering fat intake the same. Dropping fat intake to nearly zero is a bad idea, same with carbs. Processed food is convenient and tasty and typically the cause for our obesity problems. Substituting junk food for "processed" health food is no better. Eating fruit and veg and getting carbs (sugars) from them is totally different than having candy or ice-cream. Reading the diet logs of some folks I understand that they are looking for convenient easy ways to eat and still loose fat. The big truth that most people are not seeing is that food is one of the great joys of life. The sights, smells, tastes and, textures flood our senses with stimulus and can and should provide us with pleasure. That includes the preparation of meals too. The slicing and chopping of onions followed by the sound of them sizzling in the pan with a pat of butter. The smell as the starches convert to sugars and finally caramelize in the pan ready for the addition of some spices and meat. The entire process should be one for the senses to enjoy. I am planning to make a pot of Biryani for my lunches next week. I have the chicken thawing and my grocery list ready for my trip home from work. Butter, rice, saffron, onions etc. I'll get the meat cut and marinating overnight ready to get seared and placed into my slow cooker tomorrow morning. My home will be filled with the smell of tasty food all day and ready for supper and packing up for next weeks lunches. Never forget this is a journey of change not a temporary stop on the way. Learning to cook good tasty meals without using processed food at all is the path to long term fat loss and healthy living. That doesn't mean I'll never eat cake and ice-cream again it just means that when I do there will be an occasion and I will enjoy every bite.

Cha ghèill!

FYI, the BMR calculator on this site, in my opinion, calculates too high a value. Check out the Harris-Benedict Equation, Revised Harris-Benedict Equation, Mifflin St Jeor Equation, Katch-McArdle Formula and, the Cunningham Formula. I think using these equations to set a high and a low value for energy input will be very helpful.

"The slicing and chopping of onions followed by the sound of them sizzling in the pan with a pat of butter." A cook's dream! So much can be done with this to start with.
